Cubs' offense awakens too late in loss

Reds score six runs in fifth inning

Ryan Theriot had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. First hits of the season in 9 at-bars for Theriot.

Quote:
CHICAGO (AP) -- The Cubs are still winless at Wrigley Field. This time a big rally by the Reds sent them to another defeat.

Josh Hamilton, Adam Dunn and Ken Griffey Jr. had consecutive RBI hits during a six-run fifth inning Friday as the Reds overcame a 5-0 deficit against Carlos Zambrano to beat the Cubs 6-5.

It was Chicago's fourth straight loss overall and dropped Chicago to 0-3 at Wrigley Field under new manager Lou Piniella.

Zambrano (1-2) was coasting with a 5-0 lead after allowing just one hit in the first four innings and providing a good chunk of the offense. He doubled in the second and scored and then hit Aaron Harang's first pitch of the bottom of the fourth for a homer to left center.

Well, we are now 0-3 at home, very disappointing. With the exceptions of a few guys our offense have been stale all year. Zambrano looked sharp, until the 5th inning of course. I wonder if he should become a big money pitcher because he sometimes has trouble and has outings like this his fair share of times....

Cubs claim first Wrigley win vs. Reds

Hill holds Cincinnati scoreless over seven solid innings

Alfonso Soriano went 2-for-4, scoring one run and plating one RBI on Saturday.

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Daryle Ward walked to the plate with two outs and a man on third in the bottom of the seventh. A pinch-hitter of earned repute, Ward expected Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo to tread lightly against him. What he didn't count on was an intentional walk with Alfonso Soriano due up. But that's exactly what happened.

The Reds would pay for the statistically sound, but still head-scratching decision. Soriano beat out a slow roller to shortstop, scoring Cliff Floyd and sparking a five-run inning that put away the Reds, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The right-handed Arroyo has pitched well against Soriano, giving up just three hits in 22 previous at-bats, including a single in the sixth. And sure, Soriano was hitting just .205 with no RBIs coming into the game. While he didn't exactly drive the ball, the decision struck most of the Cubs as odd, considering Soriano's reputation and All-Star status. Soriano is paid a princely sum to make things happen.

"I was surprised," said Derrek Lee. "Soriano made him pay."

Great game yesterday! It was nice to see Soriano contribute, but even nice to see Hill have such a good game on the mound. He has definetly been the suprise of the season, and hopefully he keeps it up....

Cubs drop finale

Cubs' offense gets shut out.

Lilly had 10 strikeouts in 6 innings of action.

Quote:
CHICAGO (AP) -- Kyle Lohse outpitched Ted Lilly, striking out a career-high 12 batters in eight innings to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Lohse (1-0) allowed four hits and one walk. Three of those hits were by Ryan Theriot, but the Cubs couldn't muster much else against Lohse.

Jeff Conine singled in the lone run in the fourth inning.

Chicago wasted another solid outing by Lilly (1-1), who allowed a run and two hits while striking out 10 and walking one in six innings. It was his ninth game with 10 or more strikeouts and his first since June 10, with Toronto.

Ted Lilly has impressed me so much its not even funny. Sadly the offense has not, which really frustrated me. Kyle Loshe pitched excellant, but come on we should have had something going off him. This batting the first two weeks has been a COMPLETE JOKE....
