Default Samardzija pitches five innings in debut

Former Notre Dame receiver goes five innings in FSL debut

Jeff Samardzija allowed one run over five innings in his first Florida State League start.

Quote:
Alcides Escobar delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Brevard County Manatees spoiled Jeff Samardzija's Florida State League debut Friday night with a 3-2 win over the Daytona Cubs.
Samardzija played football at Notre Dame and was the school's all-time leader in receiving yards before signing a $16.5 million contract with the Chicago Cubs in January. He gave up one run on five hits over five innings in his first Advanced Class A start.

Considered a likely first-round NFL draft pick before opting for a baseball career, the 6-foot-6 right-hander walked one, struck out one and left with the score tied, 1-1.

You guys probably all remember him at Notre Dame, I am very happy to have him as a Cub. He looked pretty impressive in his debut, but only had 1 strikeout. I should cut him some slack, its only 1 game! We will surely hear more good things from this guy in the future.....
