At the buzzer, Kirk Hinrich hurled the ball the length of the court, putting an exclamation point on the Bulls' emotional 100-97 victory Saturday night over Miami.

Hinrich's jubilation contrasted sharply with the glum look Ben Wallace wore. He left the United Center on a golf cart, crutches at his side.

Team officials said Wallace suffered a hyperextended sprained left knee after Udonis Haslem's head smashed into him with 5 minutes 1 second remaining in another intense chapter in an increasingly heated rivalry.

The health of Bulls center Ben Wallace and the Miami Heat's playoff chances were in guarded condition after the Bulls' 100-97 victory Saturday at the United Center.

Wallace had to be helped to the locker room after he sprained his left knee when he landed on the Heat's Udonis Haslem, who had just drawn a charge from Kirk Hinrich, under the Bulls' basket with 5:01 left in the game.

CHICAGO - It was fight or fold for the Heat on Saturday.

The team chose to fight.

Given the way this season has gone, though, it's no surprise it didn't translate into a win.

The Heat followed Friday's blowout loss to the Knicks with a heartbreaking 100-97 loss to the Bulls at United Center. Unlike the defeat in New York, however, this one did not feature a group of listless players at a loss. This was yet another makeshift unit that still almost became just the second Eastern Conference team to win in Chicago this season, battling until the final possession.

Chicago -- In better times for the Heat, this could be considered a heartening effort against a good opponent that just wasn't enough and left at that.

Center Shaquille O'Neal and guard Gary Payton were out for the Heat. Point guard Jason Williams went down. The Heat rallied from 17 down to tie the Chicago Bulls late in the fourth quarter.

But circumstances what they are, the Heat's 100-97 loss to Bulls Saturday night at the United Center represented another lost opportunity in a season that's never been quite right.
