Which financial model produces the most pleasing mix of Free Agency, Trades and Competitive Balance?
Each is summed up in breif, but those seem to be the models in use at this time.

I have always found it funny that free market USA prefers its sports to be socialist and the socialist democracies of Europe prefer their sports to be free market.

The Euro Football modle really stinks for fans of all but the top few teams.
The plus is that ANY team can win it all. You can enter at the lowest levels and if you win, you move up one level at a time and eventualy can be in the EPL... Plus they have multinational cups...

I like the high revenue sharing of NFL mixed with the framework of the NHL financial model.
Basically, if you distributed TV revenue money (and increased its' footprint substantially), I think the NHL would be more successful! |

I don't like the NFL, because trades are just so rare. Players don't change teams during their prime. Part of that is what makes other sports popular in the offseason.
In the NFL it is the first contract when the vast majority of players are of value.

But that's what makes TEAMS popular - same names, same faces. Most of these NBA teams are completely revamped within 5 years. Remember the Bulls dual three peats? Only Jordan and Pippen were around for all six of them.

I'll see if I can find it but the average career in each sport is different. The shortest career length is the NFL, about three years. That is probably a large reason why fans don't care if players move. The players just aren't likely to be around long enough anyway.
And AJx, check out the roster of the New England Patriots. It is a dynasty of sorts, but very few on its current roster were on the first Super Championship club.

The best financial model is the one that produces the overall healthiest league.
Right now, the NFL rules. The NBA sucks hardcore. And MLB is somewhere in between. As much as I hate the wildcard and the 5 game division series, I really think they've aided in giving some of the lower payroll teams a shot at the WS. |
