I believe there is a law that forbids sports book gambling on Nevada based teams (no betting on UNLV, for instance).

An NFL team in Las Vegas would not make the casinos happy if you couldn't bet on one game every week. And if they made the Super Bowl, that would kill their biggest day of the year.

Vegas clearly seems interested in an NBA franchise and they have the prospects to do so.....more than nearly any other city vying for a professional sports team

I think Oklahoma City deserves a team before them. Just with what they did supporting the Hornets franchise.

With that being said, I think Las Vegas is next in the pecking order.

I hope the SuperSonics move to Oklahoma City, and the Kings move to Las Vegas.

And, off topic, but aren't the Nets moving to Brooklyn soon?

I think the Nets move to Brooklyn is pretty much official. They will be playing in a new stadium called Barclays Arena. However, the move may 1st happen in 2010.

New Jersey fans were not loyal enough to the Nets over the years...they didn't even support them much when they want 50 plus games and made the playoffs.

The Nets situation is an interesting one. They've always been int he tri-state area but being an Urban sport in the Swamps of Jersey certainly hurts them. The Devils have also suffered.

But it's interesting to note that Bruce Ratner's Purchase of the Nets and Atlantic Yards project has secured new arenas for both teams in two different states.

Construction is just begining on the Atlantic Yards site in Brooklyn and the Devils new arena in Newark is actually nearing completion.

Is not relevent now, but the Jazz played 11 "home" games in Las Vegas back in 82-83.

But, I am just not sure whether or Vegas can handle a team. The culture of the city seems succeed more on "ONE TIME" events that consistency.That has to be a factor. That is why I don't see MLB being big there, because of the 81 home games. Football I can imagine would be big.

I doubt seriously the NFL would put a team in Las Vegas.

It's interesting to see how people who are not from Las Vegas view the city. I have now lived in the Las Vegas area for 10 years and I can tell you that it is not anything like you people envision it. The Las Vegas strip, the night life, the gambling, strip clubs, and all that are mainly for the tourists. Most locals don't even visit the strip unless they're entertaining friends from out of town. It is avoided at all costs. It's a tourist attraction and holds little to no interest for the people who live here. There are actually real people in Las Vegas who have children and lead normal lives. And the occasional times when they go gambling is done at casinos in the outlying areas.

That all being said, getting a professional sports team here is not a novelty. It's something that locals really believe we deserve and it's not something that would lose its popularity when the "fad" wears off. Most locals originate from somewhere else and grew up following multiple sports franchises in other cities. We are hungry to experience that again. In addition, not only would locals support a professional team, but you would have the added benefit of a constant tourist population who could take in a game while in town on business or pleasure. Just the tourists alone could be a solid base at every home game. Imagine as people book a Vegas vacation to come gamble and take in a game of their local team that is scheduled to play that week.

And to further clarify someone else's remark, prostitution is NOT legal here. It is legal in Pahrump that is about an hour away. I'm not sure about Reno, but that's many hours away. Locals are not a bunch of juveniles out gambling, partying, and whoring. I am a father of 2 young daughters aged 10 and 12 and we are Christians. Yes, we have churches here, grammar schools, the whole lot. The last time I visited the strip was when we had some company from out of town who wanted to see some shows and other attractions.

I do understand though how people can see Las Vegas the way you have described it. When you come to visit, you stay in hotels on the strip and that's all you see. Once again though, we locals don't go there.

Well, I do remember when the short-lived XFL was in existence, the Las Vegas team was by far the most-supported of the other franchises. The locals are hungry for a pro team, and if the NBA or NFL is interested I'm sure Nevada politicians will make it happen...because by all appearances they are more about progress and catering to their citizens' interest rather than kissing up to the gambling trade.
