Default Vote For Rory!

heh. This is great stuff. Rory is aware of the campaign to get him elected to the All Star Game.

Fitzpatrick said he's getting a kick out of the campaign since he checked the site after hearing about it a few days ago from friends and family.

"I've been getting e-mails and calls from people back home. Someone said there were signs in Edmonton the other night," Fitzpatrick said. "People put a lot of time into it. You have to give credit to the people who put it all together. They did a great job. It's pretty funny.

"If I'm going to get in, I'm going to need a lot of help, that's for sure."

Rory Fitzpatrick has been called a lot of things around these parts. But NHL All-Star?

A facetious Web site, www.VoteforRory.com, is trying to land the scorned former Sabres defenseman into the All-Star game, and the jokers are making an impact in the Western Conference balloting - even though the Vancouver Canuck has yet to score a point.

When the NHL on Wednesday released its weekly voting update, Fitzpatrick was the 12th most popular defenseman with 31,310 write-in votes, putting him ahead of Mathieu Schneider.

Fitzpatrick was the only Western Conference write-in candidate listed. The Irondequoit native had more votes than goalie Thomas Vokoun and forwards Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight and Ladislav Nagy.

Rory Fitzpatrick, who joined Vancouver this season after four sometimes-forgettable years in Buffalo, is fifth among defensemen in Western Conference voting. He was the conference's leading vote-getter in the latest polling period with 113,509, all because of a Sabres fan who started VoteForRory.com.

Fitzpatrick, who has no points in 16 games and is a minus-2, has ground to make up in order to go to Dallas for the exhibition. The top two defensemen go, and second-place Niklas Lidstrom of Detroit has 317,373 votes compared to Fitzpatrick's 144,819.

"I'm not making any plans to go to Dallas," said Fitzpatrick, who hasn't decided if he would go should he be voted in. "If it happens, then that's a whole other fence to climb at that point."
What does the NHL think of the campaign?

NHL spokesman Gary Meagher said the league won't argue with the fans wishes.

"The purpose of fan balloting is to give our great fans a voice in the selection of the all-star starting lineup," Meagher said in an e-mail to The Canadian Press. "It should be no surprise at all that our passionate fans have responded to this opportunity with the same intensity they bring to the rink every night."
