I dunno how many of you remember that Suppan came up as a Red Sock. I am reasonably sure that those of you who do remember don't remember that it was in 1995!!!!
Yes - Suppan has had a 13 year career, and there is no real sign that he's stopping any time. He's been pretty mediocre in that time. Here's what's remarkable to me: This is a list of the ROY vote getters in 1995 (Suppan only had 20-30 innings) Marty Cordova MIN Garret Anderson CAL Andy Pettitte NYY Troy Percival CAL Shawn Green TOR Ray Durham CHW Julian Tavarez CLE Jon Nunnally KCR Tom Goodwin KCR Brad Radke MIN Steve Sparks MIL Of these guys, Cordova, Nunnally and Goodwin are long gone, and Radke and Sparks have retired in the last couple of years. Shawn Green has looked toast for several years, Anderson is a shadow of himself and Pettitte is still good. Durham has reinvented himself late in life and Tavarez is still going... strong? On the NL side, its' even weaker: Hideo Nomo LA Chipper Jones ATL Quilvio Veras FLA Jason Isringhausen NYM John Mabry STL Carlos Perez MON Chad Fonville TOT Brian Hunter HOU Charles Johnson FLA Ismael Valdez LA Nomo, veras, Mabry, Perez, Hunter, Johnson and Valdez are long gone - I don't even remember who Chad Fonville was (looked him up - he was actually waived by the dodgers during the season, picked up by the Expos and stole 20 bases - I vaguely remember that) - only Jones and Izzy are still going. What is the point of this? Suppan has 110 wins, and he's only 32. If he gets hot for the Brewers over the next 5 years, he could easily win 15-20 a year with that lineup and start making noises as a marginal HOF candidate. It's quite unlikely to happen, of course - but it kind of amazes me that he has even a chance at it... 13 years after he debuted. |
