I like the idea of acquiring Peavy, Gonzalez and Linebrink for Ramirez, Lowell and cash. That's by far the best deal available. Peavy would be excellent insurance in case the Matsuzaka deal falls through. We could also use him as trade bait if Roger Clemens joins the team.
"Pessimistic" Scenario #1: Schilling Beckett Peavy Papelbon Wakefield Scenario #2: Schilling Beckett Peavy Matsuzaka Papelbon (Wakefield to the bullpen) Ideal Scenario #3: Clemens Schilling Beckett Matsuzaka Papelbon (Wakefield to the bullpen) Then spin Peavy, Pena and Hansen to Baltimore for Miguel Tejada and a low-level prospect. Re-sign Nixon for LF. CF Crisp 3B Youkilis DH Ortiz SS Tejada RF Drew 1B Gonzalez LF Nixon C Varitek 2B Pedroia C Mirabelli? 1B/3B/OF Hinske INF Cora OF Murphy SP Clemens SP Schilling SP Beckett SP Matsuzaka SP Papelbon RHP Linebrink RHP Timlin RHP Tavarez RHP Wakefield RHP Delcarmen LHP Gabbard LHP Breslow |

There was some mention on Rotoworld and WEEI that the Padres were willing to significantly increase their trade offer. Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez were both mentioned as possibilities. This is probably an unrealistic expectation to land one or even both of them. Throwing in Lowell was my idea, as perhaps a way to entice the Padres a bit more. They expressed interest in him last year.

I have seen the possibility of Peavy/Linbrink/Gonzales listed in several places.... but I think it is simple specualtion at this point.
"IF" we were to make this deal.... (assuming D_Mat) has already signed... What should we do next?... I think we should turn to the Rangers (who need pitching and OF'ers desperately) and offer them a trade for pitching.... I am not sure who we would want to offer them.... but Maybe Peavy and Murphy + a prospect for Texiera.... That would bring back some power to this team... I fear that Trading Manny and bringing Drew in as a "replacement" means we will be right back in the same doldrums this team was in for most of the 80's .... good enough to step on the field and get their butt beat.... |

The Padres will not part with either AGon or Peavy, let alone both of them. This trade is BS, if it was offered by Kevin Towers, Theo would have said yes is 2 seconds flat, it would be done already (because it is a ridiculous deal from the Pads point).
Peavy is signed very cheap for the next three seasons (avg salary around 7mil) which makes him all that more valuable, plus their emerging star first baseman? Please. The Pads have enough holes to fill right now, let alone creating two more by filling one. We can give you Giles/Greene/Linebrink, and we take all of Manny's contract. Take it or leave it.

Manny is to valuable to the offense to much care what he wants. If management decides to keep him, Manny will produce his standard numbers. No team can or will give Boston fair value for Manny. At this point, I would get JD Drew and keep Manny unless Baltimore would work a deal that includesTejada.
