Schilling hasn't been having a good season at all, but this will still put a hole in Boston's rotation. You never know what to expect when he pitches now a days, he could get rocked or have a complete game. Glad to see his injury wasn't as serious as was expected.

What's going on with Curt Schilling? According to NESN, Terry Francona announced that Kason Gabbard will start for the Red Sox on July 15th. That's four days after the All-Star break. Has Schilling experienced a setback? I thought he didn't even have anything physically wrong.

NESN reports that Schilling will make a rehab start for Pawtucket on Saturday and then be re-evaluated. It appears likely he'll make at least two rehabilitation appearances in the minor leagues before returning to the Red Sox. Schilling said that his shoulder feels better than it's been any time this season. Barring any additional setbacks, he should be back in two weeks.

This has worked out well, on several fronts.
1) Schilling will be back, and hopefully better than ever 2) Gabbard has been quite effective - perhaps he will end up the #5 starter and Tavarez in the pen. 3) This may well drop the asking price for Schilling for next year, or at least allow the Sox to sign him to an incentive-laden clause. I've pretty come to the conclusion that any pitcher over a certain age should only be signed to contracts with starts made clauses... not that there is a chance that will ever happen. I dunno what that age is - around 35 or so. The risk of losing a month or two is just so high, and pitchers still around at that age are almost all making a lot of money. |
