A few random thoughts:
Strength of schedule: If you take teams current record as a measure of quality, the Sox just went through their toughest month. Teams they faced in May have an average win % of .506 In June, it's not a lot easier - teams have an average win % of .504, but this month includes 2 west coast swings August is tough, too - teams then have an average win % of .505, including another west coast trip April was the Sox' easiest month - the teams they played in April had an average win % of .453. IN July, it is .480 - in September, the teams currently have a win % of .470. Splits: Sox were 16-8 in April and got BETTER in may, vs. harder opponents - 20-8. Sox are 18-8 at home, and 18-8 on the road. Sox are 8-3 in 1 run games and 13-5 in blow outs. The A's have managed to play the Sox to a standstill - they split a 2 game series. The Sox have a winning record vs. every other team. Sox have lost only 3 series all season. They have lost the first game of a series only 8 times, out of 18 series (not including the 1 gamer vs. Seattle) Streaks Sox have lost 2 in a row. Twice. They have not lost 3 in a row. They have won 5 in a row twice. Times of games: Longest game of the year: 13-4 win vs. Baltimore on May 12th, 4:04, started by Schilling Shortest game of the year: 2-0 loss vs. Texas on April 6, 2:14, started by Wakefield. Schilling, Tavarez, Matsuzaka and Beckett games all last, on average, a little over 3 hours - 3:04 for beckett, 3:07 for Tavarez, 3:09 for Dice-K, 3:10 for Schilling. Games started by wakefield are much, much faster: 2:49. That's that. Hope it's interesting. |

To me it reads like the Yanks only chance of catching the Sox is in June, or never.

Yankees have a harder schedule than the Sox, though that's partly because the three games against each and the 3 vs. Mets vs 3 vs. braves.
In many ways, the Yankees and Sox share a schedule - in interleague, they play the same teams. |
