3 innings of shutout ball today, which makes 5 - though it's not clear any of them were against major league hitters (BC and Dodgers...hahaha)
Boston Red Sox - Dodgers 2, Red Sox 1 - Boston.com Interesting note at the end of the article about his blisters: Quote:

This is a guy who has to find consistency. I like Beckett overall, but last season was nerve racking. One game he'd look like an All-Star, then you have the next 2 or 3 starts look like he just picked up the ball for the first time.
We will need him to be the Beckett we thought we were getting, not last seasons version of Beckett, if we plan on doing something this season. I think that Beckett can take some pressure of Dice K to perform, if we know Schill & Beck are are keeping us in games. If that makes sense

Despite Beckett's maddening inconsistency, he did manage to win 16 games behind some pretty good run support. If he can stay healthy, mix up his pitches better so that he's not simply trying to blow people by with fastballs, he'll lower his ERA by somewhere between .5 and 1.25. Even if he just gets his ERA down to around 4.30, he could easily be a 20-game winner on this team.

They are working on him pitching lower in the strikezone so that when he throws his hard high fastball, it's more of surprise and less of a "oh good, I can hit it out!"
Apparently, they are working on his changeup, too, which hasn't been very good. Is he our #2? or is Dice-K #2? I assume it's Schill, becket/dice-k, Pap at #4 and wakefield, and Tim Wakefield is a hell of a #5 starter. Not many teams have a #5 who rarely gets injured and can throw 200 innings of league average pitching or better. I can't think of any, in fact, besides the Sox. |

The Red Sox have announced that Josh Beckett will not be making his start on Friday. The Herald speculates that Kyle Snyder will start in his place. Other possibilities would be Devern Hansack on six days rest (if he gets held back from tomorrow's scheduled start), Kason Gabbard on three days rest (he went just 5 innings in his last start), or Daniel Haigwood from Portland on regular rest. Haigwood hasn't been impressive but he's on the 40-man roster for some reason, so that's why I include him as a possibility. As for Lester, he hasn't started a game in about two weeks; I think he's being held back.
My preference would be to demote Lopez and recall Gabbard from Pawtucket. He's a strikeout pitcher with a sub-3 ERA who had quite a bit of success as a major league starter last year. He also had an outstanding spring training. Hansack's ERA is over a run higher than Gabbard's, and he looked terrible in his one big league relief outing this year. I say we demote Lopez (or place Beckett on the DL, if necessary) and recall Gabbard. |

Hansack: W(1-4), 3.89 ERA, 34.2 IP, 35 H, 4 HR, 9 BB, 37 K's.
Gabbard: W(3-1), 2.75 ERA, 39.1 IP, 32 H, 5 HR, 12 BB, 35 K's. Terry Francona confirms that it will be a Pawtucket pitcher. If it's Hansack, Beckett will have to go on the DL because he was only recently demoted. |

Hansack isn't pitching tonight for Pawtucket even though he last started five days ago on May 12. Instead, the PawSox have Charlie Zink on the hill. When I look back at the box scores for the last several games, however, I notice that the PawSox have been going with a 6-man rotation (Hansack, Hernandez, Gabbard, Pauley, Alvarez and Zink.) Lester has been mixed in there as well, so it's a bit confusing.
If the Red Sox place Beckett on the DL, they can recall Hansack from Pawtucket and let him make the start on six days of rest. If they do not place Beckett on the DL, then they could have Gabbard pitch on three days rest. Gabbard was removed from his start on Monday after just 5 innings and 63 pitches, even though he held Toledo to just 1 run. It makes one wonder whether the Red Sox told Pawtucket to save him for a potential start for the big club this weekend. Then again, the Atlanta Braves website lists Hansack as tomorrow's starting pitcher. Do the Braves know something that we don't? I'm not sure why I care so much - I guess I'm just more of a Gabbard fan after the game I saw him pitch against the White Sox last year. |

According to Don Orsillo, Tim Wakefield's start will be pushed to Monday against the Yankees, which means we'll be looking for another spot-starter for Sunday's game. Unless someone goes on the DL, this likely means that we'll see the following flurry of moves:
Friday: Lopez demoted, Gabbard activated. Saturday: Gabbard demoted, Corey promoted? Sunday: Corey demoted, Pauley activated. Monday: Pauley demoted, Delcarmen promoted? If Beckett needs another start off, we could then promote Hansack because the 10 day demotion requirement would be satisfied. |

No announcement yet on who will start Sunday's game against Atlanta. It could be Pauley on regular 4 days rest, or it could be Gabbard on 5 days rest.
Dave Pauley: W(1-1), 3.51 ERA, 41 IP, 34 H, 6 HR, 8 BB, 33 K's, .218 BAA Kason Gabbard: W(3-1), 2.75 ERA, 39.1 IP, 32 H, 5 HR, 12 BB, 35 K's, .224 BAA. Pauley is a righty, Gabbard a lefty. Atlanta's lineup doesn't have a lot of lefties in it, so I'm not sure if that'll have any impact. |
