Experience now on Youkilis’ side - Boston Red Sox - BostonHerald.com
Boston Herald (scroll down): "Assistant general manager Jed Hoyer said little progress is being made on negotiations with outfielder Wily Mo Pena’s agent, Josh Zeide, meaning the Sox are on track to have their first arbitration hearing in five years."

Pena Signs

I like the deal, we didn't have to pay too much. Willie Mo is a solid player and I think he will keep improving on his numbers. Expect more homers.

To be honest he sort of reminds me of David Ortiz for some reason....Maybe because he started his career on another team and came to the Red Sox.... He may become an Ortiz type player

I like Pena, but I don't think he'll be ortiz. He's more likely to be between Jesse Barfield and Sammy Sosa. Sosa, at his peak, was probably better than Ortiz was last year - but he was really different from david - more power, fewer walks. At his worst, he should be a cory snyder/joe carter type player. Tony Armas for the new millenium.

Try at his BEST Joe Carter is an MVP hero, 5 time allstar who compares to the likes of Dale Murphy and Jim Rice. In Baseball reference Wily compares closer to the world famous Jason Lane and Chuck Essegian Wily is a good young hitter, but to say at his worst he will be a Joe Carter type is a stretch, Joe Carter was in the top 10 MVP votes 5 times, has an 11 year streetch averaging close to 30 homeruns and constantly led the league in ABs -- Wily is still struggling to become an everyday player. |

ow - misquoted the post after mine - that might be a record!! I said "cory snyder/joe carter type player"
Obviously, if you compare Pena and Carter to the players their career stats most resemble, Pena comes out 2nd best - since Carter has a full career behind him, and clearly Pena has to show that he can handle being a full time player. However, Pena is still younger than Carter was when Carter first played fulltime, so there is certainly time. Carter didn't finish top 10 5 times, he finished top 10 4 times, 12th the 5th time, plus 3 more in the top 20. My point was really that Pena looks to be, at worst, a guy who hits for a lot of power, not a great average and not a great OBP - a guy like Carter or Snyder or Pete Incaviglia. Not as bad an average as Rob Deer or Dave Kingman, perhaps. Looking at it more closely, Carter isn't a great match - Carter was durable, and Pena gets hurt as often as Fred Lynn. Carter struck out a lot, but not nearly as often as Pena does. Armas may be a better comp - but that type of player - low BA, not many walks, lots of power - that's Pena. And I would say that *IF* Pena stays healthy for a few years and hits in the middle of the sox lineup, he'll easily hit 30-40 HR qwith 100-140 RBI. Projection is a stupid thing to do, but we do it all the time. |

Exactly, turns into a ProJectile more often than not. Cory Snyder had a decent 3 year start to his career, just....that strikezone started out the size of Rhode Island and kept on getting bigger and bigger the longer he played. Which was too bad-he had potential.
