According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies and Red Sox have had recent discussions about Todd Helton.
Back at the Winter Meetings a few Manny Ramirez trade rumors centered around the Red Sox acquiring the 33-year-old Helton, but now it appears the Rockies may want young relievers like Craig Hansen or Manny Delcarmen instead. Helton does have a complete no-trade clause, but according to the report would consider Boston. For any deal to get done the Rockies will have to eat a significant portion of the remaining six-year and $90.1 million contract. Source: Denver Post |

Depends on where you go for news.
ESPN says... ESPN.com - MLB - Rockies talking to Red Sox about trading Helton The Rockies seem to want two prospect relievers from the Sox system, Craig Hansen and Manny Declarmen. The Red Sox don't want to give up either. Looks like the MLB caliber plays being swapped would be Julian Tavarez (oh joy!) and Mike Lowell (yipee!). The dollar signs, according to ESPN, have already been figured out, it's just a matter of the prospects being included. Now, if you go to FoxSports.com... FOX Sports - MLB - Red Sox, Rockies discussing Helton trade The Rockies want Craig Hansen and Jacoby Ellsbury (which BA ranked as Boston's top prospect). The Red Sox, however, don't want to give up either. Both say the Rockies are likely to eat close to half of the salary that Helton is owed, but ESPN says that's a done deal and FoxSports says that's the major hang-up. So in the end ... who knows? Probably not going to happen unless the Rockies take a bunch of crap for the Red Sox, just to get Helton's salary out of their system so they can afford their future stars like Matt Holliday, Garret Atkins, Brad Hawpe, Jeff Francis, Chris Ianetta, etc. |

Todd Helton confirmed that he'd be willing to accept a deal to Boston, though if something is going to happen, he wants it to get done quickly.
Helton is also willing to go to Atlanta, though with the Braves' budgetary concerns, that hardly seems likely to happen. According to the Denver Post, he wouldn't accept the previously rumored deal to the Angels. The Post also says that the Red Sox offered Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez for Helton and about $40 million of the $90.1 million he's owed over the next five years. If the Rockies want youngsters, they'd presumably have to eat more of the contract. It looks like the Red Sox have little interest in doing a deal that isn't clearly favorable for them. According to a WEEI interview of a Colorado beat writer, we'll know about whether there's going to be a deal by the end of the day. Todd Helton wants the Rockies to sort things out by tomorrow. A conference call was scheduled for today at 11am ET between Larry Lucchino and the Rockies owner.

I'm a Helton fan; but he's 33 and there is always the post-Coors effect that might discount his net present value.
I'd guess that his power contribution would be diluted by a combination of atmosphere and the Fenway RF, RCF dimensions. Then too, there is the reasonable expectation of adjustment to a new city and a new league, as well. Looks great at first glance, but I just wonder how great this really would be. |
