ESPN.com - MLB - Source: Pineiro, Red Sox closing in on one-year deal
The Red Sox and Joel Pineiro are close to agreeing to a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $4 million. Incentives could increase the total. We like the idea of Pineiro as a reliever, though Eric Gagne at $6 million guaranteed seems like a better investment than Pineiro at $4 million. For that kind of money, Pineiro will likely receive an opportunity to take over as Boston's closer. He had plenty of opportunities to start elsewhere, and it seems doubtful that he's passing them up in order to become a middle reliever. |

BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Joel as a closer? Oh man, that's rich. One of the few highlights of the Mariner offseason was getting rid of Pineiro and Meche. Joel is one of the worse pitchers in major league baseball. Good luck with that Red Sox fans. Your gonna need it.

I don't mind trying a variety of different pitchers in the closer's role and then just going with whoever excels. In 2003, this worked out okay for most of the season. The Red Sox went with Brandon Lyon and he got the job done. This year, we have a variety of decent closer candidates. Why pay top dollar for a name player when some random guy within the organization could adequately fit the role? I bet that even someone like Kyle Snyder would do well as a closer. If you recall his outings last season, he'd look great for 3-4 innings and then completely fall apart the second or third time through a lineup. As a closer, he'd only see guys once, so that wouldn't be a problem. Other internal closing candidates could be Manny Delcarmen (closed for Pawtucket), Devern Hansack (he looked good in limited action last year) and the recently acquired Joel Piniero. Plus if we do sign Clemens, Papelbon could close during the playoffs.
