Default Boston trades for Brendan Donnelly

Boston traded Phil Seibel today for Brendan Donnelly of the Angels. They also signed J.C. Romero and Doug Mirabelli.

Quote:
Donnelly was 23-8 with a 2.87 ERA and four saves in 276 appearances with the Angels. He signed with them as a minor league free agent in January 2001, and made his big league debut in 2002 after 10 minor league seasons with nine different organizations.

His best year was in 2003, when he allowed only two earned runs in his first 50 innings. Donnelly's 0.38 ERA was the lowest by a regular big league reliever at the All-Star break, and he was the winning pitcher in the AL's 7-6 victory over the NL in the All-Star game. He finished the season with a 1.58 ERA and a career-high three saves.

Donnelly should certainly not be used as the closer over in Boston. He's more of a righty specialist or setup guy. Although, he may end up being part of their closer by committee. Donnelly got burned for pine tar a while back and he just started to look like himself towards the end of 2006. I think he's still got something left.

I think the Sox are still looking for a closer. The main question is: is the closer on their roster (Hansen? Declarmen?) or do they need to go get one? I think they need to go get one - I think they will get a lot of crap if they spend the amount of money they have and the bullpen struggles early.

The Sox do need to acquire a closer, but I'm glad they addressed the rest of their needs first...any news on Chan Ho Park?

What happened to Jonathan Papelbon being the closer?

Smile I agree. Good pitcher.

I'm impressed. Him, Romero, good arms. Not sure about the Other Japanese pitcher here they got, but hey-gotta be an improvement over last year's BP.
