Default Ramirez on Leno, Ortiz on Conan

Jon Papelbon started the post-championship talk show circuit by appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman a couple nights ago. Now it's Manny Ramirez's turn to bask in the spotlight, as he appears (alone) on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Ramirez will be on some time between 11:35PM ET (11/2, NBC) and 12:35AM ET. Then for you night owls out there, David Ortiz will be on with Conan O'Brien between 12:35AM ET and 1:35AM ET. Both Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien hail from Massachusetts (Andover and Brookline, respectively) and are devout Red Sox fans. It must be fun for them to interview Red Sox players in the afterglow of a World Series Championship.

Are any of you as surprised as I am to learn that Ramirez will be appearing alone on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno? This is a man who habitually ignores the media, rarely utters more than an incomprehensible line or two when forced to talk, and seems to detest public speaking in general. And now he's going to endure a 15 minute interview with Jay Leno in front of millions of people? I feel bad for him in a way, because I don't think it's going to go well for him. Normally the interviewee chats up a storm on these shows, and I have a hard time believing that Ramirez will do that tonight. The "I just wanna have fun, man, that's when you know you're a bad man, man" routine isn't going to work too well. Ramirez tends to get very repetitive once he's said one or two things in a segment, so I can't imagine how he's going to overcome that tonight. I hope he surprises us and does well, though. It's always fun to hear Ramirez's thoughts. He often comes up with a memorable gem or two.

I'm a little less concerned about David Ortiz, who seems somewhat more engaging with the public. But he tends to be boring, at least in post-game press conferences. Maybe he'll be more interesting with Conan O'Brien.

It seems to me that Curt Schilling or Mike Lowell would make better guests on one of these programs. You know that those two would never run out of things to say. Sending the bullpen along for a percussion number would have been neat too.

The Manny segment went well - here is a link to it

He was on with Steve Carrell - apparently, leno thought the same thing it was good, though - he made fun of tossing the helmet off and made fun of Leno's chin, too.

I couldn't watch the Papi segment - kelly ripa was just annoying me too much.
