Through four games (and four victories) this season, the Celtics have won three of them by a margin of 20 or more points. The last time Boston started a season 4-0 was in 1987 when they won the Eastern Conference Championship behind such luminaries as Bird, McHale and Parish. The final margins of victory in those games? 17, 9, 11 and 4.
The Hawks brought a lot of intensity during the opening quarter, and pushed the Celtics defense to work harder than it had in any of the other games. The result was a closely-fought opening 7 minutes of frenetic basketball, where we saw Atlanta's incredible athleticism go up against Boston's superior wits and skill. Ultimately, as to be expected, the wits and skill won out, and the Celtics built a comfortable lead that they never relinquished. Kevin Garnett was his typical self, nearly putting up another 20/20 night as he registered 27 points and 19 rebounds. Paul Pierce had another majestic performance, scoring an efficient 23 points and continuing to play a very unselfish brand of basketball. The captain also impressed me with his defense, in the way that he contained Joe Johnson and drew numerous charges. The unsung hero of the game was Eddie House. He came off the bench and scored 19 points on only 10 shots. He was 4 for 5 from behind the arc. In the early going, he's making a strong case for the Sixth Man of the Year Award. |
