Lucic, others survive
By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff
The Vancouver Giants, Milan Lucic's WHL team, open at home next Saturday. But Lucic won't exactly be kicking himself if he isn't back home then.

"I'd rather be here," said Lucic, one of 34 players remaining in camp. "It would be nice to be home for the home opener. But from a selfish standpoint, I've got to do what's best for myself."

Lucic is the only player with junior eligibility still in camp. Andrew Bodnarchuk, Zach Hamill, and Brad Marchand were returned to their junior clubs.

* Lucic will play on a scoring line tomorrow against Toronto. He'll skate with David Krejci and Phil Kessel. On Tuesday, Lucic was more of a checker while playing with Brad Marchand and Glen Metropolit.

* Kessel will be the right wing opposite Lucic. Kessel had skated at center throughout camp, but was on the wing today.

* While sending Hamill back to Everett was expected, it was a bit of a surprise that Marchand was shipped back to Val-d'Or. Julien said that Marchand had a strong camp and made significant strides from his first pro camp last season.

* Claude Julien flip-flopped Glen Murray and Brandon Bochenski. Tomorrow, Bochenski will play with Marc Savard and Peter Schaefer, who had good chemistry against the Islanders on Tuesday.

* Nate Thompson and Mark Mowers will see their first game action tomorrow. Thompson will center Metropolit and Shawn Thornton, while Mowers will be the pivot for Jeff Hoggan and Petteri Nokelainen. Both Metropolit and Nokelainen had primarily skated at center in camp until today.

So the Boys are 1-1 in the Pre-season, and last nites' game was a real stinker, and reminiscent of last season's efforts on the ice. Apparently Julien was really pissed off over their lack of effort in that game, and made them pay with an especially heavy skating practice.

Nice to see Lucic getting a little more time with the big boys and never know he could stick, even if only for a handful of games, and then get sent back.

Can't wait for the season to get underway.
