Default The Waiver Deadline, Aug 31

There is still a chance for players to move. Just last year the Phillies acquired Jamie Moyer on August 19th.

The rules can be rather tangled, but basically a player can be put on waivers and if claimed only 25Man roster player who have either passed through waivers or been claimed by those teams can be dealt.

If a players passes all the way through waivers he can be dealt to any team.

Usually it is players with larger contracts that wind up dealt in August as a bad team will not pick up a lot of money.

The waiver order starts with the worst team in the majors, and at times teams competeing for the same playoff spot have blocked a pickup by putting in a waiver claim on a guy they don't actually want.

A player can only be put on waivers twice.

when was the last time there was a SIGNIFICANT waiver-deadline deal? Or a significant post-deadline deal (the period between July and August 31st)?

Rod Beck in 1999 was acquired on Aug 31, 1999 and his 1.93 ERA helped the Red Sox get to the Wild Card, he appeared in two games giving up zero runs in the divisional win over Cleveland, but did give up the game winner in the 10th innning of game one of the ALCS against NYY.

Moyer did put up a 115 OPS+ last year with the Phillies and a 5-2 W/L

Jeff Conine was acquired on the 31st of August by the Marlins in 2003 and was a key to them winning the Series.

ESPN - Crasnick: Players who could be moved in August - MLB

Quote:
August can be a busy time for trades. Last season, Livan Hernandez, Javy Lopez, Eric Hinske, Jamie Moyer, Guillermo Mota, Shawn Green, Scott Schoeneweis, Russell Branyan, Neifi Perez, Phil Nevin and David Wells were among the players who changed addresses in August.
Crasnick's most likely to move this year?

Tejada
Piazza
Hunter
Glaus
Vizquel
King
Chacon
Farnsworth
Connine

That's some decent talent

Wily Mo Pena has cleared waivers. Look for him to go somewhere. Washington wouldn't surprise me.

I'm surprised Bowden didn't put in a claim.

Players who pass through waivers can still be acquired even after August 31. But they will not be eligible for postseason, barring an injury to a player at their position. (For example, you can replace an injured pitcher with another pitcher or an injured outfielder with an outfielder.)

The Yankees were apparently offered Bob wickman for Farnsworth striaght up and turned it down because Atlanta wanted them to pay Farnsworth's salary.

If they wouldn't take Wickman for him, I don't see where he's going to move and who's going to take him. Besides, the Yankees just retooled their bullpen without moving Fansworth.

According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the White Sox claimed Tejada and the Orioles pulld him back, so he can't be moved the rest of the season.
