The A's are laying the groundwork to fill in some holes that have opened since the American League Championship Series. With Frank Thomas already departed for Toronto, the A's began talks with Padres catcher Mike Piazza last week about becoming the team's DH. While negotiations are continuing, according to a source, Oakland is unlikely to sign Piazza, a Type-A free agent, until after the Dec. 1 arbitration deadline so that the team does not lose a draft pick.

I can certainly understand not wanting to lose a draft pick.
Mike Piazza to the Athletics makes sense to me. When Piazza was leaving the Mets, most, if not all, Mets fans said it would make the most sense for Piazza to go to the AL where he can DH. This would most likely prolong his career. While I would not expect Piazza to have a season like Frank Thomas did, I think he would be a nice addition to the A's lineup. Plus, he can come in handy if they need any help at catcher. |
