DAILY SOUTHTOWN :: Sports :: Cubs/Baseball Notebook
Daily Southtown (scroll down): "Hendry said he's had no talks this week with representatives for pitcher Carlos Zambrano. The final arbitration-eligible Cub this year, Zambrano is seeking $15.5 million while the Cubs are offering $11 million."

DAILY SOUTHTOWN :: Sports :: For $300 million, Cubs can't afford to get things wrong
Daily Southtown: "Right fielder Jacque Jones -- whose spikes from the outfield to the infield would work on the volleyball court but not Wrigley Field -- reportedly was seeking a trade after the season but told Piniella and Hendry he wants to stay. However, if the Cubs really want to get rid of Jones, they will."

Daily Herald | Chicago Cubs Notes
Daily Herald: "Will Carlos Zambrano be happy, healthy and signed long term? The ace of the Cubs’ pitching staff is headed for a Feb. 20 salary-arbitration hearing. The Cubs feel the $15.5 million Zambrano is seeking is way out of line and that their offer of $11.025 is more like it.

If Gil Meche is worth $11 million per for 5 years, Carlos Zambrano should stick to his guns. It's not even a question, if the Cubs don't want to pay that much for a very good starter, then they deserve to lose him.

I think that says more about the absurdity of the Meche deal than the sanity of a Zambrano arbitration year deal.

Yeah I know. I personally think Meche in the "real world" should have gotten a 1 year or 2 year deal worth about $3 million a year, but obviously this is not the real world, and teams like the Royals and Cubs can throw around money to everyone.
