I actually watched the game where he played with his son, at Round Rock. The 1 guy on the other team hit a homerun off of him, and he was absolutely thrilled.

Philadelphia Inquirer (scroll down): "Schilling wants a contract extension by opening day or he'll test the free-agent market. Start those Phillies rumors... It's likely that the Phils will take a look at free-agent reliever Dustin Hermanson, who will throw for teams this week."

Magadan keepin’ score - Boston Red Sox - BostonHerald.com

Boston Herald (scroll down): "That group could affect the Sox’ desire to sign Schilling for another year at $13 million, though any new signing presumably would require multiple seasons. In any case, as things stand, Bartolo Colon, Freddy Garcia, Jason Jennings, John Smoltz, Carlos Zambrano and Mark Buehrle are all among the potential free agents following this season, which suggests there will be a pretty fair crop to choose from."

Curt Schilling told WEEI on Thursday

Quote:
Saying he plans to become a free agent following the season because the Red Sox are not willing to negotiate a contract extension with him now or during the season.
Quote:
The Red Sox front office has hinted that they want to see how the 40-year-old pitches this year before committing more money to him and Schilling was reportedly told of their official stance Wednesday. There was speculation that he had been discussing a one-year extension worth $13 million. Like Schilling's retirement plans, this too could change. However, Schilling doesn't want to negotiate during the season.

Fine by me. I hope he finishes his career where he had his best years, back here in Philly.

I can understand the Red Sox wanting to see how Curt Schilling fairs during this upcoming season before giving him a contract extension.

I can also understand Schilling wanting a contract extension now and not during the season. But, Schilling's stance could change on this if the Red Sox see that he is performing well and offer him a nice extension.

I would think Schilling would want probably a 1 year deal plus a club option for around the same amount he makes now, $10 million or so.
