Ken Griffey Jr. to Tampa Bay?
This doesn't make sense but Marc Topkin (St. Petersburg Times beat writer) saw it fit to add this little "rumor" to his weekly Rays Rumblings piece which is usually about rumors and what not. What use does the Rays have for Griffey besides Vet leadership?

You'd put butts in the seats with Griffey, something that the competitive Rays haven't had.
They would also be adding a decent #7 bat in the AL

That si probably a good point -- but the rumor said the Rays would ahve to probably pick up his option at 16.7 mil for Grif to consider dropping his no trade clause. I don't know if that works even if they want a bigger name to help draw fans.
But name recognition does indeed help sell things. I'd be more excited about the team if they had K-Grif.

The Rays are in first place, but slipping.
I haven't hhis one in a while, but it makes a certain sense. One more bat and a veteran leader to help keep the team in first place (especially in the wake of the Yankees acquiring Nady and Marte) -- and a gate attraction too. The fact that he lives just over an hour or so away is gravy. |
