Default Chicago Cubs land free agent Soriano for $136 million

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061120/...s_soriano_dc_1

I know it's a few days late, but why not have the first thread in the new Fanhome Trade/Rumors board be about the biggest signing of the off season. 8 years is quite a long time for that much money! However the Cubs just got them the best hitter on the market.

Alfonso Soriano will be a very nice addition to the Chicago Cubs lineup, but that is a lot of years and a lot of money. But, I guess to sign Soriano, that is what the Cubs had to do.

Most outrageous deal of the off-season (in terms of money)

I thought the Matthews deal was worse.

Sori wants to win, but even in spite of their cheapskate ownership, the Nationals will win a World Championship before the Cubs win another one.

Where are the Cubs going to find the money after this deal to get hte pitching they need to make the playoffs, let alone advance in them? They're going to lose (and win) a lot of 11-10 ballgames.

How long before the Cubs and Sori find this contract intolerable and both sides wnat out? I'd say three or four years. I wonder where he lands then. (Hey, by that time, Washington should be contending.)

I am not sure Washington will be cotending in 3 or 4 years. Everybody thought the Pirates/Phillies would contend after moving into their new ball park. The Phillies haven't made the playoffs and the Pirates keep finishing in the rear of the NL Central.
