Default Santana deal is finally done -- Mets win sweepstakes.

The Mets are the winners of the Johan Santana sweepstakes, pending the ability to work out an extension with the Twins' lefthander and players passing their physicals. The deal is a four for one swap, with the Twins receiving OF Carlos Gomez, pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey if an extension is worked out.

ESPN - Mets agree to Santana deal, pending extension agreement - MLB

I don't know anything about these prospects, but the Mets are buying Santana with an extension. The package should set the bar for any Bedard trade. Keep in mind, the M's are only getting Bedard for two years. If it is a 5-1 deal, with no extension, we are overpaying.

Incredible... the Twins had a half dozen offers from the Yanks and Red Sox that were all about a thousand times better than this one, and wouldn't take any of them, trying to hold out for more. Then those offers get pulled and they end up taking a deal from the Mets in which it is quite likely none of the 4 kids involved will ever be even an average major league player.

Or, to put this another way... Carlos Gomez is the supposed centerpiece. Carlos Gomez has very nearly the same line in the minor leagues... as Melky Cabrera had in the big leagues last year.

Yeah, that's a star in the making.

This will help the Mets tremendously. It very easily could give the Mets a 5-7 win gain. It sucks they didn't have to give up Pelfrey or Martinez too.

On the bright side though, Santana has ENORMOUS bargaining power right now. And since this deal is contingent on an extension, he's about to take Wilpon to the bank. ESPN is saying the bargaining starts at 6/$150M. A ridiculous sum for a guy who plays every 5th day.

After Hampton's contract turned out, the Mets can have Santana for $25M+ per year.
