Report: Pettitte could rejoin Yankees It goes on to say that Tom Verducci is the only one making this report at the moment. I guess we shall see what happens. |

I am a big Andy Pettitte fan and would love to see him back in The Bronx. He'd be a great addition to the Yankee rotation. Wang, Mussina, Pettitte, Johnson, and either Pavano, Proctor, Igawa, Rasner, or Karstens (assuming the Yankees don't acquire yet another starter) is a very solid rotation.
I'm one who thought Andy should never have left New York. Ironically, this time it was the Astros who didn't work hard enough or make a real offer to keep him, so he's back where he should have been all along. Andy is still a solid pitcher. If he turns into the old Pettitte, great, but the Yankees don't need that. The Yankees need him to be a very solid third starter and that will most likely be what he'll do. I've followed Andy's career since he was in A ball and I'm pleased to see him back in The Bronx. Now the Yankees need to go get a good backup catcher and a good utility infielder. Pettitte signs with NYY for 1 year/$16 million and a player option for a second year at the same rate. Pettitte's agent said he would sign with the Astros for $14 million with a 2nd year option. McLane stood firm at $12 million.
Houston may restart trade talks with Colorado for Jennings or Whitesox for Garland. Both are looking for a CF and possibly one of Houston's pitching prospects. They may also look at Suppan, although they see him more as a #3 starter. They could also shop Lidge and/or Ensberg for a higher value pitcher such as Willis. |

Suppan would be a nice pickup for the Astros. If they can get Willis, they're in clover. Garland would also be good, but I think that is pretty much closed now, from what I read. I suppose it can be reopened.
Are the Yankees finished, pitching-wise? I don't think so. I think they sign Igawa and maybe get one more reliever. And a backup catcher and a utility IF. |

Before they go to Leiber, the Astros would bring up one of their prospects from AAA. With an ERA of 4.93, they could get similar results from Hirsch, Buchholz, Albers, Sampson, Rodriguez, Nieve or Astacio who have all had a try as the 5th starter over the last 2 years. If none of those guys work out, they could bring up Patton, who is their top pitching prospect, at midseason. The Astros would like to add another veteran arm, but they have enough pitching depth that they do not have to make a desperate move.
I'd say Suppan is the most likely free agent target of those remaining. The Astros did talk to his agents before signing Woody Williams at Thanksgiving. On the trade front, they have had serious talks with both the Whitesox and Rockies. The have had informal talks with the Marlins. All 3 teams have expressed interest in Taveras and Burke. |
