Default Yankees and Twins talking about Santana trade

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins have started trade talks involving Johan Santana.

Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said Monday that discussions are ongoing but it was too early to tell whether they would lead to a deal. He did not detail how far talks had progressed.

"I don't want to get into that at this point, as far as what they want, what we're willing to give and all that," he said. "It's preliminary right now."

Santana is eligible for free agency after the 2008 season, and the Twins have been trying to sign the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner to an extension.

Asked whether the Twins had said they would consider a trade, Steinbrenner responded: "Oh, yeah."

The New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers also are thought to be interested in Santana, who is far better than any of the starting pitchers available on the free-agent market.

He would be a huge, huge addition to the Yankees. He eats up the innings and he is one of the top pitchers in the whole league. The Yankees had some starting pitching issues last season, and this would address arguably their biggest weakness now.

From what I've been reading and hearing, there are 6 clubs currently interested in Santana: the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, and Mariners.

The Yankees look like the frontrunners at the moment, but the Red Sox could strengthen their position by agreeing to trade Ellsbury. So far, they're apparently trying to get the Twins to take Coco Crisp. I don't think that's happening. (Maybe if they include both Lester and Buccholtz.)

I wonder if the Twins' acquisition of a couple of OFs and the trading of their SS changes what they're looking for in a Santana deal. I have a feeling this might strengthen the Mets' hand if they're willing to part with Reyes.

Santana would be HUGE for the Yankees, especially if Pettitte returns. Can you imagine a rotation of Santana, Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, and Chamberlain?

Of course, the Yankees would still have to address their bullpen. I think they ought to call up the Nationals and see what the price is for Cordero or Rauch. Right now, the bridge to Mariano looks to be led by Kyle Farnsworth, and they're rumored to be interested in trading him for a young player or two. If they re-sign Vizcaino, that helps, but they'd still need to upgrade the pen. (The rest of it as of now looks to be Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez, Brian Bruney, Ross Ohlendorf, and either Sean Henn or Kei Igawa. Maybe Karstens works his way in there somewhere.)
