Default Ted Lilly Competition

Quote:
TORONTO -- The race for Ted Lilly's services is heating up. According to Lilly's agent, Larry O'Brien, the Chicago Cubs have put a four-year deal on the table in an attempt to lure the free-agent starter to the National League.

Toronto is still very much in the running to re-sign the left-hander, though.
Quote:
O'Brien said that he didn't anticipate Lilly signing a new contract with any team before the Winter Meetings begin on Monday. The Yankees, Orioles, Rangers and Giants have also expressed an interest in the 30-year-old pitcher, and O'Brien planned on meeting with those clubs next week, too.
Competition for Lilly heating up

So, where does everyone think Ted Lilly will end up?

Whenever the Yankees are involved, you have to think they have a very good chance of signing said player because they always have plenty of money and are always a team considered to win the World Series. Plus, Lilly did play for the Yanks in the beginning of his career.

On the other hand, the Cubs already have a contract offer on the table. I think that shows how much they want Lilly.

Do the Yanks have room for Lilly in their rotation? They will have Johnson, Mussina, Wang, Igawa and I guess their's room for Lilly. A Ted Lilly signing will end the Yankee career for Carl Pavano. I think he heads to either Toronto or The Cubs.

Pavano had a Yankees career?

Lilly sounds like a Texas pitcher to me if they cannot get Zito....

Pavano pitched in what 5 games with the Yanks? He should have stayed in Florida.

well I am not sure staying in Florida could have prevented injuries....plus there was no way they could pay him what he wanted (with their big time 14 million payroll last season..that is moving up to 20 million this year...)

I can't dig the link up right now, but I did read the Cubs are really close to signing Lilly to a deal close to what the M's gave Washburn last year.

I'll keep my eyes out to add the link.

Well, the Cubs have won the Ted Lilly competition:

Quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Jim Hendry and agent Larry O'Brien finalized a deal for free agent Ted Lilly on Wednesday night while the Cubs general manager was in the hospital undergoing an EKG.

Lilly, 30, who was 15-13 with a 4.31 ERA in 32 games for Toronto last season, agreed to a four-year, $40 million deal, O'Brien said.

Cubs got him cheap if you ask me, especially when you compare the deals other mediocre pitchers like Padilla got.

4/40 for Ted Lilly is cheap!?!?! Sure if you want to compare it to the rest of the insane deals this off-season. However if I would have asked you mid last season if Ted Lilly was worth 4 years / 40 Mil you would have laughed.

I hope these wacked out deals come back to haunt these teams when/if the market returns to normal in the next few years.

They will. It's one of the reasons my Rockies are staying from big deals (The othe reason is that the owners are dirt cheap). They got burned with Hampton and Neagle (among others). They've learned from their mistakes.
