Default First DH appearance in World Series

Ok - I'll kick off the first trivia question on this board, with a question a friend of mine asked me, and I was SURE I knew it until he proved me wrong.

In fact, not only did I give him the answer off the top of my head, but when he claimed I was wrong, I went to the internet to prove I was right. Alas, as it turns out, he was right and I was, well... less than right.

My friend isn't a huge baseball fan, so I'm not sure how he even came across this, so I apologize if it was discussed on Baseball Tonight or something recently and that's where he came up with it.

Anyhow, enough blabbering...If you've read this far, I'll reward you with actually asking the question.

The question simply is
"Who was the first player to make an appearance as a DH in the World Series?"

Did you know that off the top of your head, or did you have to look it up?

Lou Piniella is the answer I confidently answered my friend. And even more confidently, I showed him a retrosheet play-by-play link to prove I was right.

But that answer is incorrect!

Hello? Anybody in here??

The answer can be found in this link.

Caution: You need to read it really carefully to see the correct answer. Otherwise you'll think it's the same incorrect answer that I thought it was for years.

So it was Driessen as he was at the plate when Perez was thrown out. Very sneaky.

Correct! For 20+years I 'knew' the answer to this question was Piniella, only to be proven wrong. Dan Driessen was in fact at the plate in the 1st inning, but didn't complete his at bat.
