Default On a Pace . . . .

While everybody is counting down milestone Homers, we're overlooking two other records. Magglio Ordonez is on a pace to break Earl Webb's record of 67 Doubles (Mags has 34). Itr seems that almost every year somebody has that many by now (usually Biggio) , but nobody ever breaks the record. Even more interesting, a record that I thought would never be broken, could be challenged. Curtis Granderson hit his 15th Triple today, and if he put his mind to it, could challenge the amazing record of 36 Triples by Chief Wilson. Granderson would have to do what I think Wilson must have done---put his head down and try to stretch everything. Wilson hit only 19 doubles in his record year, so he must have been thrown out at third about 20 times. Incredibly, Wilson was third in the league in HRs, too--who knows how many of his 11 homers were inside-the-park, and would have been additional triples if he had been cut down at the plate.

Somehow, with Barry Bonds chasing Aaron's record, I can't imagine that anybody will be talking much about whether Earl Webb's survivors show up at Comerica to see Ordonez hit his 68th double.

The doubles record seems a bit more within reach than the triples record. As fast as Granderson is on the basepaths, Jim Leyland is a no-nonsense manager who won't tolerate his players stretching doubles into triples, if it puts the team at risk of losing games.

One thing that probably puts the triples record out of reach is that very few triples are hit with none out or two out, because the advantage of advancing to third is marginal.

"On a pace" is a highly problematic expression. A player is 'on a pace' only by having what is by far a career half-season---and now he has repeat that, and to have nother career half-season to actually achieve the record.

When was the last time three players all exceeded the previous record in any department in the same season?

Currently, Ryan Howard, Mark Reynolds and Jack Cust are all on a pace to strike out 200 times, to eclipse the old record of 199.
