Coming later today, MLB.com will be releasing it's list of the top 5 greatest teams of all time.
"As a tribute during Black History Month, MLB.com put the question to baseball historians and Negro League experts, and their responses proved as varied as the people who weighed in on the subject. With the votes tallied, MLB.com has compiled a list of the five greatest teams in the history of black baseball. Twenty-five teams got at least one vote. A consensus emerged early, and during the month of February, MLB.com will count down the top five. Beginning with No. 5 on Tuesday, baseball fans will get a glimpse of what made these teams what they were." I have done a good of reading on the history of the Negro Leagues, and we hear all about Satchel Page, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, Larry Doby, Jackie Robinson, but there were a great many other players a lot of people never heard of that played on some of these great teams. A book that I highly recommend to anyone wanting to know about the great history of the Negro Leagues, check out the book "Only the Ball was White." by Robert Peterson. It talks about the vision and foresight and struggle in getting such a venture to fruition. Led by Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard, many experts put this team on a par
with the '27 Yankees. This team could not hurt you with the long ball, but their pitching was also second to none. Cool Papa Bell was also on this team, which was owned by Cum Posey who himself at one time was a star in the Negro Leagues. The Grays in 1943 won their 9th consecutive Negro National League Crown, and beat the Birmingham Black Barons in 7 game for the Negro Leauge World Series championship.
