Default Guthrie coming back to earth

Well... many of us knew it would be coming, and it is here. The awesome rise of Guthrie's pitching efforts had to level off, and it has. Guthrie is being figured out. His pitching ratios did not quite fit with his ERA early in the season when he was having his great success, and now it is truly showing in his recent performances. He has gone from his sub 3 ERA to 3.5 and still on the rise..... In pitching against the true big boys in the league, he is getting lit up in his second go around matchups... his weakness seems to show more against patient hitters that wait for his pitching sports to come into their zones, because they are not fearful of his velocity or movement.... his walks per 9IP are up as a result of this. Where early in the season he had but one game with 3 or more walks, it seems to be common place after July with only 3 games with less than 3 walks.... his only truly good game after July 1 has come against a team in OAK with a very suspect lineup....

While I think he will still be a nice addition in this rotation in the future with our O's, I do not think he will be the great #2 SP behind Bedard that was hoped for by so many faithful O's fans... while nobody before this year could have expected what was to come out during this season, and you have to love what we have got from him... I think we have seen the best of Guthrie and I doubt we will see a long stretch from him like we did from April 4 until July 1

That's one opinion.

Here's another.....

Guthrie has had one problem and one problem only..... he's been getting the ball up in the zone and the good hitters have been looking for that.

His stuff is the same. His velocity is the same.
It's his location which has slipped upward somewhat.

Guthrie is as intelligent as any pitcher who ever wore an Oriole uniform.
The one thing he needs is experience.

McNally, Palmer, Flanagan, McGregor, Stone, Martinez..... they all had their ups and downs after impressively and successfully emerging on the scene. Every one of them struggled before gaining the consistency necessary to stick with the big boys.

Jeremy has had only a limited time in the major leagues.
During that very limited time he has established himself as a smart, well-conditioned, thoroughly prepared, competitive starter.

To me, this gives him as good of a chance to make right whatever has gone wrong for him in a mere three starts as any of the former Oriole greats who I mentioned did.

I'm not sure why you'd want to write the complete history of Jeremy Guthrie's pitching career after he's only barely pitched over 250 innings in that career so far.

He'll be fine.

It looks like his downward spiral continues tonight... looking horrible in the HR's to Upton and Wilson... he has just lost that look of promise... or as Survivor would say... he's lost the Eye of the Tiger...
