That is good news... and will be better news if he gets a nice extension to stay in B-More

The O's and BRob split the difference and settle at $4.2 mill for 2007. I believe unless the O's start putting it together, Roberts may test his value when he is eligible to be a FA. I'll put Bedard in this scenario also.

Sooner or later the O's FO needs to make a significant long-term extention signing of one of their own! This would be a good step in the right direction to show everyone especially the fans that this organization is dedicating itself to turning this 9 year losing streak around!!

I think this just gives them more time, I expect that an extension will be announced this summer. I doubt that Angelos will let either Roberts or Bedard get away. But I think he will try to get a "home town" discount. He did with Mussina and Ripken.

If PA keeps on expecting to get the "home town discount", I think we might have to watch other players go elsewhere like Mussina did.

Some will and some won't..... no matter what the Orioles do.
Mussina left for no reason other than because he's simply a jerk..... and the bad karma he took with him has prevented him from realizing his goals of winning either a Cy Young or a World Series Championship Ring. The Orioles have historically lost Bobby Grich, Wayne Garland, Reggie Jackson, Boog Powell, Ross Grimsley, Randy Myers, Kevin Brown, Ben McDonald, Joe Orsulak, Jamie Moyer, B.J. Ryan, Mussina, and Rafael Palmeiro all to Free Agency. With very little exception, the prime motivating factor in each case was spelled "$$$$$". Since that factor is a given, I'd much rather see the club try to filter out the guys who really want to be Baltimore Orioles. Loyalty is a two-way street. |

If you fool around long enough and low ball even a player that would like to stay with the O's, they would be crazy not to take the higher offer from another team. I sure would hate to lose someone like Bedard or some of our other young talented guys because Angelos thinks he can save a few bucks.

Next yr. we will know if Angelos really wants to keep Roberts
because believe me other teams will compete for his services. Roberts says he was only 50% last yr.he expects to be much better not that he feels 100%.stronger. Last edited by hagers; 02-24-2007 at 09:34 PM. Reason: later news |

Why is it that a player "would be crazy" not to take a higher offer from another team, but a GM or owner automatically becomes villified if he tries to negotiate a lower amount with this player?
Now mind you..... nine times out of ten, this "lower amount" is still a gainful, multi-million $$ total..... it just happens to not be the player's highest offer. Why is it only the responsibility of the ballclub to show good faith and loyalty and not that of the player? |
