Default Oh God, please no... not this approach again....

Orioles make an offer to Luis Gonzalez....

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...e&type=fantasy

An industry source confirmed Saturday that the Orioles made Gonzalez a one-year contract offer Friday night, the Baltimore Sun reports.

At least it woud only be a one year deal... however... the last thing we need is an aging OF..... we HAVE OF talent.... we don't need older players... it is not like we are competing for a title next year and need that one additional piece....

IMHO this would be a BAD move

I don't mind the Orioles trying to sign Gonzalez for a few reasons.

1. He would bring a good veteran presence to the clubhouse, and I think would compliment Kevin Millar nicely.

2. He hit less than 20 homers, yes, but he also slugged 52 doubles, which you have to believe at least 10 of would turn into homers in the tight quarters at Camden Yards.

3. The Orioles have already hinted that they may just go with a one-year fix in Left Field until next year when guys like Andruw Jones will be on the market, and we'll have plenty-o-cash to throw his way.

If they are waiting for a bigger name... then wait... don't spend the extra money and get an overaged guy....

What is the best that can happen?? He wins us about 4 more games thru his stick. That does not get us into playoff contention. That does not do anything of real signifigance.

That playtime could be better used on a young player. Those 4 losses that turn to wins could make the difference in about 4spaces in where we will be in the ammy draft. The extra money he costs will not be made up for in revinue. It is not like fans leap out of their seats (or into them in the stadium with extra tickets bought) because of Luis Gonzalez.

This is just basically a signing of an older and overrated player for no real reason, if it happens.

Not necessarily, because since he would only sign a one-year contract with us, it wouldn't hurt us at all next season, and we would probably get him for at least a semi-bargain, all things considered.

If the Orioles front office (and Luis Gonzalez) didn't think the Orioles would be competetive this year, they would not have offered a contract to him and he would not be considering it, at his age he wants to go to a contender. The O's didn't want to overspend on rather overrated guys like Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano, and didn't. If they can't get a trade done for a big-name slugger in LF, I'd imagine they'll bring in Gonzo for a year to hopefully tutor our younger guys while helping us win games and make a run at the playoffs so we can sign, say, Andruw Jones in the off-season.
