Default Rockies release Javy

Rockies release Lopez

Javy's player page

I found this quote interesting from his player page:

Quote:
"They kind of told me they want to give me the release early in Spring Training because I might have a chance to go with somebody else," Lopez said. "I don't think I'll go anywhere else as a backup. The way I feel, I can easily be an everyday catcher. If I'm not an everyday catcher, I'd rather not play this year or retire." He did say the only place he'd go as a backup would be in Atlanta, where he was a two-time All-Star.
Did I miss a signing this winter, or is Brayan Pena still slated as our likely backup? If he is, I wouldn't mind seeing Javy come back if the price is right. I wasn't particularly sorry to see him go, and never liked his defense, but at least he was capable of remembering the signs.

I wonder if he could/would play first base.

I love Javy, but if he takes time away from the youngins I'd rather just continue mourning his original departure.

Normally, I'd agree with you... but in this case, the youngun in question is without a doubt the worst defensive player I've ever seen above the Rookie League level, at any position. A catcher who can't frame a pitch at al, who pisses umps off so badly by blocking their view that they start calling every pitch not swung at a ball, and who cannot remember the signs is completely useless, no matter how well he can hit.
