Blech. Better than Prado, but not good.

This one really doesn't bother me. He's a better option than Orr or Pena as the main utility guy. All of us have got to come to grips with the fact that given the budget that the Braves are using, this is the type of player we will be getting. Until we get an owner willing to spend money, we'll see no more big player names (or even middle of the road types) in Atlanta via FA.

I agree Lenny. The fact that the man that calls himself our commissioner even allows Liberty to be at the forefront of the sale is disgraceful. I have no problem with selling to them, but when they outright say it's being done only as a tax break and they'll look to sale it as soon as the IRS regs allow (2 years I think), is when a decent commissoner steps in. How is that good for the game? Good for only one thing, the bottom line!

The owners should make money off such an expensive investment, and they should be allowed to do with the team what they want since they own it, but when they purchase it they have to understand this is baseball, and it's more about the sport than a business. If they don't want to make money but preserve the sport at the same time, then they need to find something else to invest in. I would be willing to bet that Liberty only does harm to the Braves by the time they are ready to unload them. |

The current thinking is that the way to raise the value of a franchise is to cut payroll to the bone so that it will carry as little long term debt as possible. Personally, I think that's a ridiculous idea, as it seems the damage to the revenue stream would be a higher amount than the payroll cuts. Let's use a drastic example; Say they cut the payroll to $30 million. IMO, the combination of fewer ticket sales, fewer concessions sold during games, less total merchandise sales, and so on, would add up to more than the $50 million per annum they'd have saved on payroll.
