Default Braves sign Chris Woodward

To a 1-year deal.

Blech. Better than Prado, but not good.

I dont know, Prado isnt better than alot of people but I would take him over Woodward.

The only positive about Woodward is he can play like 5 spots on the field.

Geez. With the money wasted on Sturtze and Woodward, we could've kept Giles.

I'm not sure they really wanted to resign him.

I think Giles was 50/50 money and the Braves wanting to cut ties.

Woodward was signed to be a utility player, not our 2nd baseman.

This one really doesn't bother me. He's a better option than Orr or Pena as the main utility guy. All of us have got to come to grips with the fact that given the budget that the Braves are using, this is the type of player we will be getting. Until we get an owner willing to spend money, we'll see no more big player names (or even middle of the road types) in Atlanta via FA.

If this guy replaces Pena or Petey Boatpropeller no prob. Four more years and we'll be lookin' more like Kansas City South, than the Atlanta Braves.

I wouldn't expect to get that owner who spend anytime soon. This company that is looking to buy the Braves will probably be worse, and to get the tax break they want they have to keep the team for a certain amount of time. So don't expect to see it for the next several years.

70 mil last year and expect it to drop from here.

I agree Lenny. The fact that the man that calls himself our commissioner even allows Liberty to be at the forefront of the sale is disgraceful. I have no problem with selling to them, but when they outright say it's being done only as a tax break and they'll look to sale it as soon as the IRS regs allow (2 years I think), is when a decent commissoner steps in. How is that good for the game? Good for only one thing, the bottom line!

The problem is they are treating this like it was any other business transaction. And your right, that is the commissoners job to step in and not allow things like that to happen.

The owners should make money off such an expensive investment, and they should be allowed to do with the team what they want since they own it, but when they purchase it they have to understand this is baseball, and it's more about the sport than a business. If they don't want to make money but preserve the sport at the same time, then they need to find something else to invest in. I would be willing to bet that Liberty only does harm to the Braves by the time they are ready to unload them.

See I agree 100%. But I've had many tell me that they think that Liberty would increase payroll to make it more attractive to another buyer. That assumes extra payroll gives you winning years, which is not always true. I think they will cut and spend as little as possible until they can put the team back up on the market. I'd be willing to bet the team goes back on the market 2 years to the day of the sale from TW. IMO, it will be an ugly 2 years.

The current thinking is that the way to raise the value of a franchise is to cut payroll to the bone so that it will carry as little long term debt as possible. Personally, I think that's a ridiculous idea, as it seems the damage to the revenue stream would be a higher amount than the payroll cuts. Let's use a drastic example; Say they cut the payroll to $30 million. IMO, the combination of fewer ticket sales, fewer concessions sold during games, less total merchandise sales, and so on, would add up to more than the $50 million per annum they'd have saved on payroll.
