I was just thinking about his career last night as I watching the highlights of the game. Given the consistent pain he's had in his shoulder this year, all the elbow operations, and his age...I just gotta figure this is the last season I'm gonna be seeing #29 on the mound for the Braves. What do you ya'll think?

I'll go a step further... I'm wondering if this is the last stand for the Big Three in its entirety. Maddux has pretty much been saying he's done after this season since last year, though all off the record. If this year doesn't convince Glavine he's done I don't know what will. And Smoltzie's arm is certainly telling him it's time.
If any of them hang around another year, though, Smoltz is the most likely, I think. He's the one who is performing the best (despite last night), and he is incredibly stubborn.

Not only do I also think this is the last year for the Three Amigos, I would welcome it. All three of them are still pitching well. They should all go out before embarrassment takes over.

In a recent in question segment by the media, Smoltz stated that he hadn't completely ruled out surgery in the OS - but, I think that's just his way of keeping them at a distance and preventing them from writing his obituary prematurely .

Yeah, Doggie is still being rumored as on the trading block here in SD, but with all the casualties to their starters (Peavy, Young, Estes) they really can't afford to let him go. Would love to see all three go this year & in Brvaos unis but looking less likely for Doggie now. Smoltz is likely done, the arm angle to mitigate the pain all over again.

The Official Site of The Atlanta Braves: News: Smoltz may be facing shoulder surgery
ATLANTA -- John Smoltz has said that he'll be content if he never throws another pitch. Now, just two days after he attempted to alleviate stress on his shoulder with a move to the bullpen, the Braves veteran pitcher finds this to be a more defined possibility. The Braves have scheduled an 11:30 a.m. ET news conference at Turner Field and at that time, they are expected to discuss Smoltz's future. There has been talk that he will need to undergo season-ending surgery on his right shoulder. The Braves said that executive vice president Frank Wren, manager Bobby Cox and Smoltz will be in attendance at the news conference. more serious than we thought, I guess..

I had no idea John's injury was that bad. I guess that means when Chipper goes, all links to the old 90's teams will be gone. What an era nearing an end between now and a couple more years. I'm pretty happy, though. Between my Packers losing Brett Favre and now the Braves about to lose Smokes and probably Glavine, I've gotten to see some pretty decent players over the last 20+ years.

Frack, well there goes that hope. At his age, the likelihood of a successful return are slim & nil & I gotta feelin ole Slim's a saddlin up as I type.
