I'm just checking out his stats and its pretty clear that barring a drastic change he's not going to be a Jason Bay or Matt Holliday type player.
He seems to be more inline with a Mike Cameron type player with less speed and less patience at the plate. Now I realize he's still young. But, last year he regressed a bit and this year he looks lost. I just hope we're smart and don't sign him to a long-term deal too soon when we have guys like Heyward and Johnson on the farm.

Regressed last year?
2006: .260/.293/.449 2007: .293/.338/.444 He traded 5 points of slugging for 33 points of average and 45 points of OBP last year. That's not a regression in my mind. But he sure as hell has regressed this year thus far. I dunno... he keeps learning, showing progress, giving me hope, and then goes right back to his old ways. I dunno what to expect from him.

I was checking out his minor league stats and they're pretty much right in line with what he's been doing for the big team. What the heck did they see in this guy that they thought he was gonna be a star?

I don't believe Gorkys will ever be anything more than a fourth outfielder, a la Blanco.

Based on what Snowman? I know there are some that think he is better than Schafer and that while JJ was a nice piece, Gorkys was the real talent in th Edgar deal. Of course no one knows for sure, but that is the first time I have heard or read a low of a projection for him. |

Yeah, it's just my own opinion. Or, what the pfigment of my imagination said.
When I watch him play, here's what I see: An amazing defensive outfielder who can flat out fly. A guy who has zero power (and I do mean ZERO), and doesn't look as if he will ever develop any. And a guy who isn't patient enough to be capable of putting up an OBP at the higher levels that would be acceptable from a guy who'd be lucky to hit more than two homers a year. So yeah, I foresee a .340ish OBP and one or two homers a year, but decent batting averages, good contact, great speed and defense. Which screams fourth outfielder to me. A guy who can make contact and hit .280 while pinch-hitting and serve as a defensive sub and/or pinch runner can be very valuable off the bench. But that .280/.340/.380 line won't be acceptable if played every day.
