Rumblings from San Dog indicate that Doggie might be available despite getting his 350th last night as it only slightly slowed down the Padre implosion express as it careens into oblivion. Would it be worth getting him back, considering this is likely gonna be his last year as well as Glavine's & Smoltzies? I guess it would depend on the cost & if they can ever figure out how to win on the road.
Season stats here

Of all the pitchers to leave the Braves, seeing Maddux go hurt the most. I wouldn't mind seeing him back as a third or fourth starter if the price was right. I don't see Smoltz being a starter anymore so we have to fill those shoes. I'm not sure James is the answer. Maddux can still pitch a decent game but whether or not we could score any runs for him would be questionable. In the long run, we're probably better off getting a younger guy for the future.

Well Dice, he's used to it in SD already at least at home with da Bravos, after checking their Home vs Away batting splits (more on that in another thread), he's got a great chance to win. Da Pads have Petco on the brain & it looked like they would blow his 350th last night (at home) like they'd done twice before.

As Dice pointed out, we gotta fill that Smoltz gap with something other than a kid, as I'm not holding my breath on Hampton's "triumphant" return.
I'm sure Wren won't trade the farm for Doggie, we'll see how this develops as the trading deadline nears.

If we're in the hunt all year, a guy like Maddux could help a lot. He's never hurt (at least I don't think he has been) and can give you the innings as well as keep the game close, from what I've seen so far. If he'd come back at a discount, I'd like to see him here but if we're out of the race by July, we might as well concentrate on the younger guys or a good FA next year.

The down side is, its likely to be the last season for both Doggie & Glavine, so both slots would need to be filled next season. Smoltzie is likely done as well though he probably doesn't want to admit it yet.
My best hope this year is that Glavine faces Doggie in SD Jul 11-13 & Smoltzie closes it out. I doubt all three will be in baseball next year.

Well, hell, as it stands we have a borderline #1 (Hudson), a kid who sure looks like a #2 (JJ), two #5's (Glavine and James), and some scrubs (Reyes, Carlyle, Bennett). Hoping for him to be a #3 is probably a bit much for Doggie at this point, but I'd still like to see him plugged into that hole between the #2 and the #5s.

The rumblings I was speaking of were in a SD UT article today (you have to fill a short profile out to get to the online paper).

Geez, I don't know what Peavy's contract looks like, but if he's saying stuff like that (which is kind of unprofessional, imo) it almost sounds like he's looking for a trade. Maybe we can get both he and Madduz for Tex and French. Hey, I can dream. |

Well Dice, the wheels are falling off rapidly here. The smoke ownership has been blowing up the fans butts here since Petco was finished is coming back to haunt. Season ticket sales are waay down ( I know 3 personally that dumped theirs) & I myself am down from a 4 way shared package to my own Flex 13 package that includes da Bravos games & all weekday day games.
The Alderson/Bean approach is failing miserably here. Moores/Alderson & Towers are feeling the heat. Hell during last week's telecasts of the Pad Bravos series, their own broadcasters were laying into em & the postgame show was like watching a funeral service. With the MLB worst O & a pen that is atypical to say the least in SD, the starters are kinda getting ticked off, but unlike da Bravos Big Three when we had the exact same problems, the word is getting out because unlike ATL, SD hasn't made any significant moves to shore up an anemic O. Edmonds dumping is an admission of how far they've slid. If they don't right the ship soon, they won at home again to day against the pitiful Rockies, Doggie could very well be trade bait.

The Padres need to rebuild and trade Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Greg Maddux, and Randy Wolf.
I would love to see Peavy in a Yankees uniform. Give up Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, Kei Igawa and Melky Cabrera. It would benefit both teams.

If what's going on in SD is their attempt at the Beane/Alderson approach, they should really go study some more.
