Well, you know I put about as much stock into the MLBTradeRumors as I do the sudden religious conversion of a neo-celebrity immediately after an arrest, but....

They're saying the Royals had the second largest offer at 2 yrs, $22 million. Which, if true, would mean that the Dodgers overbid the second best offer by nearly two-thirds.

Snow, what did you think Andruw was worth on the open market...? Especially considering his awful season and advancing age...

To me? Not very damn much. I don't think he will continue to be as bad as he was this past year, but as my prediction above shows, I believe his best years to be behind him, and I wouldn't want any part of him in 2-3 years.

That said, bad season or not he should have gotten more than Torii Hunter. Torii is an average hitter who is older and will be declining as well, and is a slightly lesser defensive player. He has been nowhere near as good as Andruw in his career, and IMO his signing set the market for the CFs.

The fact that he got 5 years and Andruw only two shows that there are still a lot of franchises out there still putting too much weight on batting average.

Good luck, Druw. It was a pleasure.

Back from Nashville, carry on | Braves | ajc.com

from David O'Brien's blog - Dec. 10

Speaking of Andruw: He ain’t in Atlanta anymore, as he’ll discover quickly if he reads the L.A. Times.

Here’s part of what the always-acerbic (and often hilarious) T.J. Simers wrote in the Times:

“… At first glance it would look like a no-brainer, adding a player such as Andruw Jones to make up for last season’s Juan Pierre blunder. Not our money, of course, although the Parking Lot Attendant [blogmeister note: that’s how Simers refers to Dodgers owner Frank McCourt] did raise parking prices after signing Pierre.
“The Dodgers just made Jones the fifth highest-paid player in baseball. Not our money, but it will be interesting to see how much Dodger dogs cost next season.
“The Dodgers are gambling Jones will return to form, but you would think they would get a bargain in signing him because of last year’s crummy play. But instead he’s going to get a raise.
“Jones knew he was going into the final year of his contract last season, which is usually a sure bet a player is going to really put out to better his negotiating position. Shea Hillenbrand finished last season with a higher batting average than Jones, who hit .222.
“And yet both the Dodgers and Plaschke made the point that Jones will be motivated to play harder for the Dodgers because he signed a two-year deal and will want another big contract.
“If you have watched Jones play, there’s nothing that seems to motivate him….”

Ouch.

*snicker*

Instead of moving Pierre and his ridiculous contract to LF and trading Kemp, the Dodgers may have found a [s]sucker[/s] team to take Pierre off their hands, as Kenny "I can make Ned Colletti and Jim Bowden look competent" Williams continues to show the world exactly how lucky they were in '05.

Edit: Damn, the strikethrough doesn't work on this board, huh?
