Well, now, instead of one year to prove '07 was a fluke
year - he'll have two. He made need it. I agree with bedell, it'll be Dodger Bluw for Druw.Nobody knows Andruw better than the Bob. I think more than budget caused the Braves to shy away from him. They may feel that his body has taken a beating and that he's already reached his peak. He'll never be worth the highest they've already paid him.

I have a little more faith in Andruw than that, and I hope he excels in LA or wherever he lands — though never at the Braves' expense, of course.
I'd like to see him in Petco with Maddux, but it would kill his power numbers so it obviously isn't a fit; Andruw should really look at some offensive home parks, such as Texas or even Colorado, if he wants to rebuild value. Of course, at this point Boras is still holding firm on the long-term demands. |

Well, Chavez Ravine isn't the home run death park it used to be, but it still isn't a good fit for his swing, IMO.

That may be sarcasm (I'm not reading it as such, and I usually pride myself on sensitivity to the subtly sardonic), but I honestly think Andruw Jones was the perfect option for the 2008 Braves, if Wren et al really want excellent defense and a one-year option: through arbitration, he would be cost-controlled, and with the reception he's had on the current free-agent market, he might have accepted.
Wren would just have to sell McGuirk and ownership on a one-year budget "bump" – with a corresponding deflation in 2009: Hampton is off the books, Glavine is likely retired, Schafer should be (hopefully) ascending to CF, and younger pitchers will (hopefully) be ready to step up in the rotation. Such a plan for 2008 wouldn't even preclude a Teixeira extension, as an extra $6 million in 2008 could be included with this "bump," and his 2009 salary would be more-than-compensated by the obligations departing the Braves following 2008. I just don't see any way that he would ever accept arby or a one year deal. Again, Torii Hunter got 5 yrs at $18 million per. Andruw has been about twice as good as Torii Hunter in his career, and he's a year younger.

The Royals are apparently jumping in on the bidding. They only want to give him two years as well, though.

Regardless of where Andruw ultimately signs, the longer he waits, the fewer his options. Royals are keying in on Jose Guillen - Dodgers may now settle for Mike Cameron - and Aaron Rowand is still available.
I was not bashing AJ (would still take him back), but could the Braves truly not afford one more year at 15 million, or do they feel there's a chance he doesn't rebound enough to justify that kind of money? If I'm not mistaken, our budget now stands at around 90 million.

Apparently Andruw thinks the Dodgers offer is laughable.

I'll copy the prediction I made on another board this morning:
.240/.330/.440, 30 homers. A very expensive slightly above average centerfielder.

Of course, the huge negative for the Dodgers here is that rather than benching Pierre or finding some sucker to take him and part of his contract off of their hands, they will instead move Pierre to left and trade Matt Kemp.

Oh I don't know. He made 13.5 mil last year. I think that as much as he loves Bobby, he could have been persuaded to re-sign for about that much on a one or two year deal.
Looking at the details of how the signing bonus is spread out, here are how the years break down: (08) - 14.1; (09) - 17.1; (10) - 5. 14 million is barely even a pay raise, and we probably could have gotten a hometown discount on the 17.1 mil in '09. But we never even tried. F+ for the front office on this one. |
