Do we want too? The 08 FA Class is really good. We could sign Vladimir Guerrero for instance instead. (And Plug Kelly Johnson at third, Brent Lillibridge at SS, Yunel at Seccond).
I like chipper and all but hes getting old. |

Yeah, he's getting up there but when he was healthy, he sure made good contact this past season. The guy does have a knack for getting hurt, though. I'm sure games played will be a big part of his next contract, just as it is now.

Chipper will be cheaper; if things play out as 2007 did, Chipper might also be significantly better (147 OPS+ in 574 AB for Guerrero vs. 166 OPS+ in 513 AB for Jones). Considering Chipper plays third (at an improving level each year, apparently) and seems very likely (based on recent comments) to continue with these ~$11 million handshake-option deals, I like the chances of keeping him even if the Braves really thought about bringing in Guerrero.
Personally, I'd rather invest in Teixeira: throw him $18 million in 2008 as incentive to guarantee three to five more years beyond that at $18-$20, and I think you could lock it down with Boras this winter — if you believe the Braves have "many millions more to spend." As long as Francoeur doesn't become too expensive (and he shouldn't if the Braves negotiate a long-term contract this offseason), he is a more than adequate RF for the next few years, despite his patent inadequacies in plate discipline; I'd be willing to risk Chipper's health the next few years considering the level of play he's exhibited the past few years – provided the Braves don't do something foolish, like trade away Kelly Johnson. (Lillibridge also offers good depth and insurance, but may be traded away if he isn't moved to CF.) |
