It's more than Hunter saying it. Article after article is stating that he is letting it be known he will not sign an extension with anyone other than the Yankees unless the amount is more per year than A-Rod's Texas deal. I cannot imagine anyone else trading top pieces away for one year of a player, even Santana. Reminds me a bit of the Griffey screwed the Mariners while making sure he got traded to Cincy for what at the time looked to be nearly nothing (the big difference being the fact that Hughes is actually a damned good piece... 21 and already a major league #2 pitcher, with solid ace potential. Cameron was coming off of a year in which he barely cleared the Mendoza line, and was being given up on by his second team in two years.). And I hope it works out for the Yanks just as well as that deal worked out for the Reds.

Talk now that the Sawx will give up Ellisbury. It feels like an arms race between the Sawx and the Yanks. The Cold Baseball War! Who Blinks first! The Arms Race! Santana, Bedard, Haren!
In the end anybody else looses. |

Well, it's one step forward and two back for the Twins. They've apparently agreed to add Ellsbury, but are pulling Lester and instead adding a pitcher named Masterson I'm not familiar with. The Yankees have also given the Twins until Monday night to agree to their offer or they're going to pull it, and might pull Hughes anyway because of the delay. Twins should've took it while they could.
Also, the Astros made the worst signing of the offseason, giving Kaz Matsui $5.5 million per for the next three years, and the Padres are nearing an extension with Peavy that would lock him up from '10 through '12 at $17 mil per.

Before I get to the link here, I want to stress something: Do not click the link if you are easily offended by foul language. Period.
No, really. I mean that. Anyway, as far as I can tell, this is a legitimate auction house, specializing in baseball collectibles. In their blog they have some pics of a document in which the league office was attempting to put an end to on-field swearing by players way back in 1897, complete with numerous examples of the sort of unacceptable language they wanted eradicated. Al Swearengen would be proud

Man, if the Twins don't want to see Santana leave for nothing more than draft picks after next season they'd better stop doing the Chuck Lamar imitation. The Yankees have contacted Oakland about Haren and B'more about Bedard (who has said he will not sign an extension with the O's), and the BoSox have made inquiries into Haren and Sheets.

The Nats and Rays are discussing a Dukes deal.
Which means that Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes could be in the same clubhouse in '08.

Heh, the Yankees and BoSox reportedly collectively pulled Hughes, Ellsbury, and Buchholz, and the Twins are now close to dealing Santana to the BoSox for Lester, Crisp, P Justin Masterson, and IF Jed Lowrie.
They just screwed themselves royally by not taking Hughes or Ellsbury when they were on the table.

ESPN Radio 1000 reports that the Cubs have traded Omar Infante and Will Ohman to the Braves for Jose Ascanio.
The Cubs traded for Infante last month, but both he and Ohman were somewhat redundant on the roster and figure to cost a combined $3.5 million or so for 2008. A 22-year-old reliever, Ascanio had a 2.54 ERA and 71/18 K/BB ratio in 78 innings at Double-A in 2007 before a 13-game stint with the Braves to end the season. |

We traded Ascanio to the Cubs for Ohman and Infante. Infante is a slightly younger Pete Orr, and Ohman is a slightly older, less talented Villareal who cannot pitch as many innings.
