Orr, who was designated for assignment last week, will take a career .263/.292/.339 line into free agency."

So, apparently the Yankees are offering Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and Jose Tabata for Johan; the Twins want Phil Hughes instead of Kennedy. The BoSox are offering Jon Lester, Coco Crisp, and Jed Lowrie the Twins want Jacoby Ellsbury instead of Crisp. The Twins supposedly favour the Yanks offer and know that that is where Santana wants to go, but they are trying to hold out for Hughes or Ellsbury.

Not official yet, but apparently the Mets have traded Milledge to the Nats for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.

Odd deal for the Mets, IMO... I'm wondering if this one is a hoax.

Well, the Mets already traded for Estrada and signed Torrealba, so this would give them three big league catchers, with Schneider toting the smallest stick to the plate. I can't really understand why they'd add three catchers in a month.

Was that Yorvit Torrealba Snow? If so that deal didn't go thru, as Yorvit is with the Rockies.

This from Rotoworld:

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal confirms that the Nationals have acquired Lastings Milledge from the Mets for Brian Schneider and Ryan Church.
An official announcement will come later this afternoon. Rosenthal says that the Mets offered Johnny Estrada to the Nats in the trade, free of charge, but that the Nats preferred to look elsewhere for a Schneider replacement.

From Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Colorado Rockies and catcher Yorvit Torrealba have agreed terms on a two-year contract worth nearly $7 million.

Torrealba, 29, will receive a $500,000 signing bonus, a $2.75 million salary in 2008, and another $3.5 million in 2009, the team said Friday on its Web site.

Huh, okay. Looks like the 3 year, $14.4 million deal Torrealba had with the Mets fell through after it had already been announced. I missed that one.

Quote:
The reason for the sudden collapse of Yorvit Torrealba's deal with the Mets has been a closely guarded secret the past two weeks. The team insisted that Torrealba failed a physical, but his agent, Melvin Roman, disputed that last night and said Torrealba might take legal action against the Mets for what he asserts is a fraudulent claim.

"I'm disappointed how the whole situation was handled by them," Roman said. "Yorvit is 100 percent healthy. I'm talking to the Players Association and we're investigating where to go from here."

Torrealba finalized a two-year contract worth a guaranteed $7.25 million yesterday to return to the Rockies, who apparently have no health concerns involving him. But the Mets scuttled their three-year, $14.4-million deal with Torrealba because of what the team said is a 50 percent tear of the rotator cuff.

Roman said Torrealba was examined by the Rockies' team physician and orthopedist James Andrews, who did not find any sign of a tear. Torrealba's camp believes that general manager Omar Minaya changed his mind. Minaya had no comment.

Speaking of which, is it just me or have their been a lot of these sorts of claims (dishonest or unethical ways of doing business, I mean) leveled against Minaya since he went to New York? Seems like this is at least the fourth or fifth one.

Well, that one's official. I really think this was a bad deal for the Mets. No matter how good his defense is, Schneider can't hit the side of a barn with a bat in his hand, even for a catcher. Church is a pretty decent player, but I really doubt he'll ever be an (deserving) All-Star. Milledge should have brought more talent, no matter his cancerous tendencies.

Well, the Yankees have reportedly added Hughes into the Santana offer along with Cabrera, pulling Tabata and Jackson out as a prerequisite to do so.

If it's possible to get a team to overpay for a player of Santana's caliber, the Twins just did it. Man, Hughes is gonna be a good one.

Guess the BoSox can call Oakland and reopen the Haren talks, huh?

Default just one more yearly attempt....

at buying a WS title..

Yankees decide to offer Phil Hughes in package for Johan Santana

There had been speculation the Red Sox were closing in on a deal on Thursday, but Yankee executives don't believe there was much to the rumors. And sources Friday said the Twins won't consider a deal with the Sox unless they include two of their big three prospects, pitchers Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury.
The Sox apparently have told the Twins they won't do that, including only Lester among those three as part of a four-player proposal on Thursday.

Likewise, the Twins told the Dodgers they had to have two of their top three young players - James Loney, Clayton Kershaw and Jonathan Broxton. The Dodgers, however, apparently have fallen out of the race because of the cost it will take to sign Santana to a contract extension.

So the Yankees loom as favorites, according to sources, partly because Santana, who has a no-trade clause in his contract, wants to play for them. Former Twins center fielder Torii Hunter, who recently signed with the Angels, has been telling people since last year that Santana would love to play for the Yankees.

If the Twins and Yankees do reach an agreement, the Twins will give the Yankees a window of opportunity to work out a contract extension with the southpaw, which is likely to be $20 million-$25 million a year for six years.

I hope this move works out as well for NYY as did the ones involving the acquisition of Mussina...Randy Johnson... Giambi... And, if the Braves don't win a title next year - I hope the Twins do!

Rather than snatching the Hughes offer while it's on the table, the Twins will instead meet with the BoSox today in an attempt to get them to up their offer to include both Ellsbury and Buchholz.

MIN is just playing both ends against each other; can't really blame em. Make one or the other pay in blood if they wanna buy a WS.

Mets back in it?

Twins Insider » Blog Archive » Saturday update: The Twins Will Not Compromise

There’s a chance that the Mets may re-think their reluctance to add shortstop Jose Reyes to a deal because they are desperate for starting pitching. If Reyes becomes available, look for the Mets to surge in this race. I’ve been told the Twins would prefer to send Santana to a National League team. Santana would like the N.L. so he can hit.

This is all so much BS - I thought Torri Hunter said Santana always wanted to be a Yankee.

Per Rotoworld:

Braves designated RHP Lance Cormier for assignment.
Cormier had a 7.09 ERA in nine starts and one relief appearance for the Braves last season, leaving him with a career mark of 14-18 with a 5.98 ERA and a 157/129 K/BB ratio in 244 innings. In other words, he's not very good.

Couldn't have said that better mahownself...........
