Q&A with Neal Huntington What blew my mind about that was that the things he lists as "traditional" are things most announcers and many sportswriters still consider new-fangled.

Kenny Williams continues to be a complete idiot, as he gives Juan Uribe $4.5 million to stay with the ChiSox.

First and Third base coaches will be wearing helmets on the field from now on.
And I say, it's about time. Too bad that the accident waiting to happen always has to happen before the preventative measures are taken.

I don't know if a helmet would have saved Coolbaugh. He died of a ruptured neck artery.

Could the Mets Outbid NYY for Santana??
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/09/sp...ll&oref=slogin ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 8 — The general managers meetings are the appetizer of the baseball off-season, a chance for teams to gauge the market for trades and free agents. The winter meetings next month will be more intense, and with Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins expected to be dangled then, the Yankees will move aggressively to get him. Barton Silverman for The New York Times As the general managers meetings broke up Thursday, the Twins had not made Santana available because they were trying to re-sign him. But as a two-time Cy Young award winner who is only 28 years old, Santana is expected to command $20 million a season. He is signed for one more year and the Twins cannot possibly afford him beyond that. The Yankees can, and they may have the young pitching to entice Minnesota. If Santana becomes available, the Yankees may have competition from the Mets, who expect to lose Tom Glavine to the Atlanta Braves. Mets General Manager Omar Minaya said it would be easier to acquire a top starter in a trade than through free agency. “I think there’s potential out there,” Minaya said. At this point, the Yankees are counting on their three young starters to play a vital role in 2008, especially with Andy Pettitte unsure if he will return for a final season. Chamberlain, Hughes and Kennedy are highly sought by others but virtually indispensable to the Yankees. “There’s clearly an argument that can be made that I can’t afford to move some of our young starters even if I wanted to,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “I’m looking to replace some innings right now without Andy, because we don’t have him.” The Yankees cannot count on them to work 200 innings each, so they have a great need to restock their bullpen, in which the erratic Kyle Farnsworth — who could draw interest from the Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers — is the lone veteran under contract. But the bullpen is a lesser priority than re-signing the free agents Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera, who will receive new offers from the Yankees before other teams can start negotiating with them Tuesday.

I really don't see how the Yankees have the pieces to trade for much of anything. They've just said they will not trade the three young pitchers (Joba, Proctor, and Hughes), even for Miggy Cabrera, which leaves them with what, two legitimate tradeworthy prospects?

Well even if they do not trade those 3.....I think they will lighten their stance on Kennedy in a month or so. They still have Wang, and he has gotten back to back 19 wins season in his first full 2 years in the majors along with a 3.7 ERA in the AL. There has been rumors of him being on the block over the 3 youngsters. They also have Olendorf, Tabta and Humberto Sanchez. They have a bunch of pieces to trade, and I fully expect Melky and Kennedy to go somewhere for a 3b

Hey, does anyone know the date when FAs can begin resigning with new teams? CBS says Monday, but by my reckoning it should be Tuesday. It's 16 days after the final game of the Series, right?

Obviously MLB doesn't consider it an Important Date! I thought it was 14 days (2 weeks).
ESPN says FA filing period ends Nov 12 as well.

Yankees set to bring A-Rod back - on their terms
Alex Rodriguez may be headed back to the Bronx after all -- but on the Yankees' terms. Despite all of the back-and-forth posturing between the Yankees and A-Rod' camp, the Daily News learned today that the two sides have been discussing a deal for the past few days to keep the two-time MVP in pinstripes, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The biggest catch? The Yankees don't want agent Scott Boras involved in the negotiations. "We will not negotiate with Scott Boras," a Yankees source said. "He cannot be in the room." The Yankees are also aware that Boras could convince Rodriguez to stop the talks. "We realize it could be a trap to get us back in the negotiations," said one Yankee official. "But we don't think that's the case." Rodriguez apparently approached the Yankees through a third-party intermediary. "He went to them," said the source. "Alex is going to be back with the Yankees," the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been made public. "The Yankees don't have a choice. How are they going to compete without Alex? They need him back." ooh boy ^^ this statement makes Jeter look foolish now ... wonder what his return will do to their relatiionship now "Alex likes to be the center of the universe," the source said. "He wants to be a part of the Stadium going down and the opening of the new one. It's not about money. It's about his face being everywhere. This is the only stage that can guarantee that." ...and, to think I once liked him and thought all those stories out of Texas were exaggerated...
