The Globe is reporting that Schilling has come to terms with the BoSox on a on year extension. Supposedly a base salary of $8 million, another $2 million to not show up at spring training overweight, and another $3 million in potential performance bonuses.

Kasten Chats with AJ - Braves looking at Coco Crispy

Atlanta Braves Rumors: Pro Sports Daily

Nationals' President Meets With A. Jones

November 6 Washington Post (registration required)

"Though Washington Nationals President Stan Kasten has spent much of his time with the club explaining why he believes signing expensive free agents should be the last step in a rebuilding process, Kasten himself met with former Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones recently at Jones's Atlanta home, a source with knowledge of the situation said yesterday... In keeping with the idea of at least making contact with free agents, the Nationals have also inquired about Livan Hernandez, the right-hander who threw the first pitch when baseball returned to Washington in 2005 but was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006."
Interest in Coco

November 6 Boston Herald

"A number of teams are believed to be interested in Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp, including the Twins, Rangers, Braves, Phillies and Cubs... A contract extension for Sox manager Terry Francona, who is signed only through next season, is in the works but not imminent, according to Epstein."

Let's see... Marte for Renteria, Marte for Coco, and now we're looking at dealing for Coco?

He's been a well below average hitter the last two years, and 4 of his 6 career years. I sure hope the price tag is commensurate to that.

Apparently Boston is looking for a pitcher in return for Crispy - and the Twins appear to be interested. I think we'll see the Braves name mentioned in many scenarios dealing with OFer's - means almost nuttin'.

Heh, and the Twins are considering dealing Santana. What's the price tag going to be on that kid?

How many years does Santana have before he's a free agent? I'm too lazy to look it up. I know Lincecum has 5 left right? Why the hell would you trade these guys that you can afford, years before you can't afford them anymore, ya know?

Well, Bedard and Santana are both FAs after '08, I think. So I can kind of understand it in those cases. But Lincecum and Kazmir make no sense whatsoever, and Lincecum for Crawford is just moronic.

The Giants quite possibly have the dumbest pfront office and owner presently on Earth. Not only are they thinkin' of gettin' rid of Lincecum, they are close to a deal to sign Omar Visquel to a one year 5.5 mill contract. Visquel is gonna be 41 in April, had his worst year ever this year and earned 4 mill. So they are gonna give him a pfriggin' raise.....

This from an online chat with the Pirates new GM, Neal Huntington:

Quote:
The Pirates upper management has widely ignored OBP (on base percentage) in the past. How important will OBP be in player evaluation under your leadership?
-- Eric S., Pennsboro, W.Va

We are going to utilize several objective measures of player performance to evaluate and develop players. We'll rely on the more traditional objective evaluations: OPS (on base percentage plus slugging percentage) , WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched), Runs Created, ERC (Component ERA), GB/FB (ground ball to fly ball ratio), K/9 (strikeouts per nine innings), K/BB (strikeouts to walks ratio), BB%, etc., but we'll also look to rely on some of the more recent variations: VORP (value over replacement player), Relative Performance, EqAve (equivalent average), EqOBP (equivalent on base percentage), EqSLG (equivalent slugging percentage), BIP% (balls put into play percentage), wOBA (weighted on base average), Range Factor, PMR (probabilistic model of range) and Zone Rating.

Wow.

Default Tommy..Tommy...Tommmy Hawk

Tom Glavine return to Atlanta Braves looks likely

The Braves, who couldn't free the money to offer Tom Glavine a contract last winter, apparently don't have that obstacle this time. And that greatly enhances the chances Glavine will finish his career in Atlanta rather than with the Mets.

"We had interest last year as well, but the timing was not right for our club," Frank Wren, who succeeded John Schuerholz as Braves GM, told the Daily News yesterday at the GM meetings. "This year I think we'd be in a position where we could make an offer. I'm sure we'll talk and see what his expectations are and see where it will lead."

Glavine, whose 2007 season - and most likely his Met career - ended with a disastrous start that finished his team's historic collapse - already has committed to pitching in 2008. It's believed to be a no-brainer that Glavine would sign with the Braves if they make a competitive offer. Glavine was vacationing with his family yesterday and was unavailable to comment.

"I guess we will know more if - and that's a big if - they make a good offer," one person monitoring Glavine's free agency told the Daily News yesterday.
Said Glavine last week: "I have decided to pitch because I believe I can still do it well and because I still enjoy the game. I will look at all possibilities and sit down with my family and decide what works best for us."

"I think it would be nice for our fans if Tommy finished as a Brave," Wren said. "At the same time, we're looking for a quality pitcher, and we feel Tommy is still that."

The Mets will continue to search for a frontline starter, with the usual suspects - the A's Joe Blanton and White Sox' Jose Contreras and Jon Garland - among the players discussed.
