Let's see... the Baker method.
Never play anyone under 33 playing time if you can help it. Try to never pull a starter with fewer than 140 pitches thrown. Make sure no one slow walks... ever. They just clog the bases. Make sure to give at least 1200 PAs a year to players who will hit .220 with single digits in homers and walks. If half of that can go to Official Worst Hitter of All-Time Neifi Perez, all the better.

So, the Phils got Lohse last year when we needed him much worse, and didn't have to give up all that much for him. I was not happy.
Then we gave Glav $8 million for a year this year when Lohse was a free agent. Now the Cards are going to sign him for a song, and he'll outpitch Glav this season. What part of giving mediocre contracts to league average starters does our front office not understand? Seems like we always overpay for someone when there are cheaper, near-identical (or even better) options available.

The Official Site of The Atlanta Braves: News: Francoeur hit in face by pitch
Very scary and I wasn't aware that he already had a metal plate under his cheekbone, from a previous hit to his face.

Here's a little refresher excerpt on that injury in 2004, renny."He can still feel it when it storms. The occasional tingling in the right side of his face whenever the thunder rolls through Atlanta. That’s where the 95 mph fastball smashed into his cheekbone as he was squaring around to bunt in what should have been his final at-bat for the Class-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Jeff Francoeur won’t forget that day. It was July 7, 2004—the day he had finally been called up to the Double-A Mississippi Braves, whom he would join the next day. He’d had it all figured out. He would spend the rest of 2004 proving himself in Double A, make a great showing at Spring Training in March and then begin the 2005 regular season as the starting right fielder of the big-league club, the Atlanta Braves. Instead, Francoeur landed in a hospital bed, wondering if he’d ever see out of his right eye again. The ball had broken both his orbital bone and his cheekbone and had endangered the clarity of his vision. As if sliders weren’t hard enough for him to see with perfect vision, Francoeur knew they’d be impossible if his sight was compromised." Don't pforget Bossie, Agnes, Gertrude, Millicent, Florence, Barbara, Aprile, crap ah can't name all the gurls, there's so many. The bull and I know them all well, wait, that doesn't sound right........Big Pizzle knows them intimately, ah just milk 'em. Last edited by pfiggy; March 17th, 2008 at 11:39 AM. |

IIRC, he also had a staph infection set in the fall after first occurrence, and was put on IV antibiotics to make sure he didn't lose his eye.

I sort of wish I hadn't taken Jay Bruce now; I forgot the Reds signed Patterson.

Hell, Corey will fit right in with the Reds now, what with Baker vowing to get those base-cloggers Dunn and Votto to stop walking.
