I'm not sure there's much that's classic about the Penguins look.
They changed their colors from blue-and-white to black-and-gold in the early 80s. The logo itself has gone through a few variations and it was a creation of the late 60s-early 70s which can hardly be called a classic period in logo design.
In my mind, the futuristic Penguins uniform was fantastic and they should have never abandoned it. While a number of professional sports franchises tried to modernize their logos, only the Penguins really came up with a design that worked on many levels: stylized, yet minimal. Dignified, but exciting.
I could live without some of the jersey experiments like the pseudo Rangers sash but the logo seems underrated to me. It also made sense as an attempt to revive an image of a city too often stereotyped for being stuck in the past and still struggling to escape it.
