Manny is worth 1.2 runs a game? Compared to what - me batting 4th?
If Manny is worth 1.2 runs a game, he is tremendously underpaid and should easily be the MVP of the league. No one is worth that.
Of course the Sox can win without Manny. They need talent back for him and they need to spend the $18M they save with Manny gone in a smart way - but the Tigers went to the world series with no hitter as good as Manny or Ortiz. The Cards won the world series with only 1 great hitter and a shaky pitching staff. OK, so they barely made it to the postseason, so maybe they arent' the best model.
Teams have won everything with all sorts of teams - not having Manny doesn't automatically relegate the Sox to mediocrity.
I do agree that if the Sox lose manny's O, they need to either replace it or shore up the staff, and especially the pen.
