Drury stated the territorial aspects of things but what she didn't bring up was the fact you're lumping more teams in the east.
I'm not lobbying for KC, Houston, Las Vegas, Portland, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina or any other city out west but for the sake fo the NHL -- if it's going to be more than a cult sport it has to EXPAND it's reach, not contract it.
In blind passion of pro-Canada, it's easy miss that logic. I'm not saying add more teams as Expansion has hurt the league. What I am saying is you can't lump every team within a 500 mile radius. New York (2 teams), New Jersey, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston... Nine teams in that close a proximity? Heck, how many teams are just outside that 500 mile range? Detroit, Washington, Pittsburgh, Columbus... And you want to add to it?
It's bad business. Being blindly nationalist doesn't let you see the problem with this arrangement. "Only 3 of those teams are Canadian!" isn't the logic, it's the proximity, as was stated. 15 teams in a 700+ mile radius. Neither Canada or the US are solely populated in the east...
